Reader Kore Scott writes: “What are your view on equipment customisation, skins, logos, etc? I know there are a lot of DJs that use the same equipment, which may be why some of them feel they need a little something extra to make them stand out. I guess to be a DJ you must have a unique and creative personality, and that often shows itself by DJs expressing themselves through the visual appearance of their equipment. But I was interested in your thoughts.”

Digital DJ Tips says:

Good question! We’re not talking about technical mods here, more visual changes. From the cliched DJ-name-on-back-of-laptop “mod”, all the way to hand-painted controller down to a high degree of intricacy, you’re right: Many DJs do like to mod their gear in this way.

However, as someone who likes to keep my gear exactly how it came out of the box, I’m really unqualified to comment on this one. Which is why it’s the perfect candidate for our Sunday “over to the readers” post.

So, over to you! What do you think? Why do DJs choose to mod their gear in these ways? What’s the best / worst defacement of DJ gear you’ve ever seen? Do you do it yourself? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
