Controller Clinic #14: Improving The Effects On Virtual DJ LE & Mixtrack

Mixtrack Pro effects section

The effects controls on the Mixtrack Pro: What you actually get depends on the software you use it with, and with Virtual DJ LE, your options are quite limited.

Following our recent tutorial video on when to use DJ effects, Digital DJ Tips reader John Spiegel writes: “I use a Numark Mixtrack with Virtual DJ LE. In the effects section there is no filter, either hi or low pass. I was wondering if there’s a way to either get around that or fix that.

“Also, on the echo section, I can’t quite figure out how to control the timing of the echo. When I turn it on it just goes crazy. I realize this is sort of vague, but any chance you could help me out?”

Digital DJ Tips says:

The effects are limited with Virtual DJ LE software, because they’d like you to buy the full version. Some controllers (such as the Stanton DJC.4) come with a version with filters, but it seems yours doesn’t. For the echo, all you can do is play with the parameter knobs that are available to you if any.

The effects are limited with Virtual DJ LE software, because they’d like you to buy the full version…

Consider buying the full-price version via the upgrade page, available from the config window (there’ll be a discount, scroll down for the box to fill in your serial to get it), which will unlock the effects in Virtual DJ including the filter, and also give you the chance to add VST effects of your own (VST are plug-in pro effects for music software), along with a myriad other improvements (and a free upgrade to Virtual DJ 8, and all future versions, when they arrive).

Alternatively, you could go for different software. Another paid-for option is Traktor Pro 2.5, which has loads of effects and is currently cheaper than a Virtual DJ upgrade. Just be aware that Traktor is not the easiest to set up so you’ll have to contend with mappings, output routing settings etc.

Finally, you can download Serato DJ Intro for free, which has some good basic effects including filters. Note that this only works with Mixtrack Pro, not Mixtrack. (You say you use Mixtrack but many people actually mean “Mixtrack Pro” when they speak of Mixtrack).

you should upgrade, the effects in VDJ LE are terrible, and it will open up the ability to map your controller.

You should try changing to Traktor, effects are way better than VDJ and more intuitive.

What about the Korg Kaosspads and whatever effects pads there?

Get Traktor. Changed my DJ game for the better when I bought it and you can still do a lot even if you have only a Mixtrack (trust me, I’m in the same boat).

VDJ also has worse sound quality imo.

Actually Justin, i do not think Virtual DJ has terrible sound. Correct me if I am wrong here but I think that depends on your sound card

I am using Virtual DJ with my Hercules DJ Console MK IV and i find the sound to be pretty good.

Move to Traktor, once you get the hang of mapping, you’ll enjoy it. And, yes it is a game changer

There is a filter build-in in VDJ (not as an effect), though I do not know if it is availabe in this particular LE version. But that doesn’t matter since it sounds awefull.

The effects certainly aren’t VirtualDJ’s strong suit, I think everyone agrees on that. I believe VDJ 8 is anticipated to have better effects. There are several decent effect available for pro users, I’m using TexZK’s filter and EchoDoppler effects (both much better than the build-in ones).

Go with Traktor Pro. The price has come down recently and Native Instruments is bundling it with even their most basic sound card now for around $120 USD, last I checked. (Nice to have a back up card just in case.) Do a google search for a good Mixtrack Pro Tacktor Mapping and you’re sure to find something useful & save yourself the trouble of setting up your mapping from scratch.

Before switching to Traktor, do a google search for Mixtrack Pro Traktor Mappings and see what other people have been able to do with it. If you decide it’s the way to go, you may want to pick up one of the Audio 2 external cards from NI. It’s cheap and comes bundled with Tracktor Pro 2.5 with the new remix decks.

Sorry, but it is Traktor which is limited with effects. You can, add “dozens” of vst-fx in Virtual DJ, and activate all of them (of you find this necessary). http://www.kvraudio.com/q.php Here you find hundreds (you can search also for free ones)

  10. Bren says:

If you’re serious about effects consider a a mixer with good onboard effects or a stand-alone FX unit, the second best option for you is VST’s which fortunately VDJ supports.

It’s also been pointed out that VDJ8 will feature all new FX among other things.
