DJ Player 5.0 For iPad Brings Midi Mapping & Multi-Route Audio

DJ Player 5

Your iPad, fully mapped to a full-sized DJ controller? All possible with the latest release of DJ Player.

In a big week for iOS DJing, DJ Player 5.0 was released into the App Store today. (Update: Here’s a DJ Player v5.0 review.) The update offers fully mappable Midi controls for multiple hardware units, and user-configurable audio routing taking advantage of iOS 6 multi-route audio.

Other improvements include the facility to import mapping straight from a web page, low-latency WiFi streaming, and the ability to import audio files from other apps.

Mappings can be created, modified, imported and shared (using iTunes File Sharing), and there’s a build in mapping editor with Midi learn and a Midi monitor. Multiple Midi sources can be used simultaneously.

While the iOS 6 multi-channel audio options are extensive, it’s worth noting that the new version still plays nicely with iOS 5, with all the same options available as before – indeed, audio routing for iOS 5 users has actually been simplified.

If Algoriddim’s djay is the Serato of iOS DJing, then DJ Player is definitely the Traktor.

The Midi mapping capabilities were recently demonstrated in a series of videos; here’s DJ Player being controller by a Vestax VCI-400.

DJ Player has been regularly updated since its first appearance in 2008, and for professional iOS DJs, it represents one of the most flexible, powerful and stable choices. If Algoriddim’s djay is the Serato of iOS DJing, then DJ Player is definitely the Traktor.

We’ll have a full review soon, but meanwhile you can go grab the latest version now: App Store (US), App Store (UK).

With proper mapping, full Midi, and genuine multi-channel audio, do you think that iOS is now a viable platform for serious DJing? Please share your thoughts below.

I want to try the midi-mapping with Novation Twitch and Numark V7 (it’s midi-compliant right?) like yesterday! Thanks!

  2. Chance says:

Does this work on controllers that have embedded sound cards? I want to know before I drop 50 bucks on it.

    • Gábor says:

Yes, but both the sound card and the MIDI part must be USB Class Compliant. You can test it: plug it in, then try to play music with the default Apple music app. If it outputs your music on the master or the headphone output of your controller, then it works. If iOS displays your device uses too much power, use a powered USB hub.

Hopefully someone can get this working with a Novation Twitch and a USB powered hub, and please let us know which hub you used.

So far I haven’t had luck with “APC 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub – 2x Front Facing Ports, 5x Rear Facing Ports, USB 2.0″…

        Thanks

  3. John Jones says:

Same here, I would like to see this working with two V7′s…

  4. juwansome says:

So far, not able to get this working with V7. iPad says device is not supported. Can’t get Novation Twitch working with it either, using external powered hub 7-port APC, and of course it draws too much power from the iPad without a hub.

So I hope I can put my $50 to good use soon (somehow) and then hopefully the V7 sound cards also… :( I did manage to map some of the m-audio x-session pro buttons/sliders, but not all work yet, not even the cross fader! Maybe it’s just my luck…

    Has anyone else tried?

Anyone else tried getting it working with the Twitch with different USB hubs?

No DVS support in the 5.0 update? Midi Support and multi-route audio are definitely awesome, but was really hoping for the DVS stuff :/

    • DJ Hombre says:

      Kyle,
The Midi and multi route audio are both definitely awesome as you have noticed! Have patience with the DVS though; we know that the Stereomusik Systems team are perfectionists and have teased us with a glimpse of the DVS functionality. I know the custom vinyls are being pressed up right now and it’ll have to go through beta testing first. Maybe by the end of the year perhaps?

  6. Gábor says:

As there is no driver can be installed on iOS, only USB class compliant MIDI and Audio devices can be used. Some products from some manufacturers are not class compliant, which means they don’t implement the standards. A Vestax VCI-400 is both USB MIDI and USB Audio Class compliant, and there are many compliant devices in the cheapest price range too. I don’t know exactly why a manufacturer doesn’t make a product class compliant (it has no negative impact on performance or functionality), but now they have a push from iOS DJs, and hopefully all of them will consider this in the future.

Maybe something to push manufacturers for during this weekend’s BPM show in Birmingham?!

Seeing as I only switched back from an iMac to MBP for djing this recent iOS djing development is awesome. Just a few more upgrades and more compatible controllers and I might go back to big ass iMac for home and an iPad. Nice!

  8. loop says:

What about the VCI-380? Do you think it works properly?

Although expensive for a 2 channel, it’s a very proper controller for iPad. The 400 is an overkill IMO. It’s self-powered, has enough buttons and a great set of I/O options.

Phil, you should have one around i hope (or could probably arrange to get, at least). Perhaps you could try it for us?

    • loop says:

Also the Denon 3000? It has less features, but is relatively cheap, especially with price drop …

      • kalo says:

just tested 2 Controller (with iPad Midi Monitor):

        Denon MC3000:
works great ! ;) , so midi class compliant, but you need an active ush hub (it doesn’t work without)

        Hercules DJ Console 4-mx:
does not work at all (also with usb hub), device not visible in Midi Monitor

        [ link ]
    • DJ Hombre says:

      Hi Loop,
I don’t have a VCI-380 but it is class compliant – ie it doesn’t need any downloadable drivers to function. So it should be play nicely with DJ Player.

  9. Deusany - Brasil says:

First i had buy the RedBull player to try ios on djing. so i have tree questions.
1- this feature will be part of Red Bull player?
2- what about the cable conection once my equipment midi port is USB-B connector and my Ipad is USB-A connector.
3- i can use this software with Denon Dn-S3700?
If some one have answer for any of those question, please let me know…

    • Gábor says:

Red Bull BPM: later. USB cable: sounds good, usually this is how it looks. Denon: I don’t know if it’s class compliant or not.

  10. Paco Loco says:

Anyone tried this with a Vestax VCM-100 (VCM not VCI) ?

    [ link ]
    • DJ Hombre says:

I don’t think the VCM-100 is USB class compliant…I believe it needs to install a driver to function, which means it wont work when connected to an iOS device.

      • Paco Loco says:

Damn that is a shame if true… can anyone who has one confirm this? Thanks

        [ link ]
  11. Masterpandaness says:

I can confirm that this does not work with the Kontrol s2… I really wanted that one to work… Dumb lack of USB class compliance…

    [ link ]
  12. Paco Loco says:

Here’s another question: anyone got a Mixvibes U-Mix Control to try it with?
Can’t seem to find the info on if that controller is class-compliant or not.

    [ link ]
  13. What i find a bit dissapointing is that my Numark Mixdeck doesn’t work with DJ Player… Numark says it is Class compliant! I can say the same for the iDJ3, also.

    [ link ]
    • Phil Morse says:

We’re off to run some “class compliant” tests at BPM tomorrow…

      [ link ]
    • Gábor says:

Try another powered USB hub maybe? Is your hub having a power source?

      [ link ]
  14. Quinton says:

Thanks for this article, I didn’t know you could do that on a iPad, time to update mine to 6 now and see if my controller works well with it.
