NAMM 2013: Numark NS7 II Serato DJ Controller Video Talkthrough

So here it is – a world first video of the new Numark NS7 II, straight from the press preview day at NAMM. (Want a still picture and the details? They’re in our earlier Numark NS7 II Serato DJ Controller Announced piece.)

It is as you’d expect from the pictures, with the notable addition of “capacitive knobs”. That means, as is explained in the piece, that the knobs “know” you’re touching them.

It remains to be seen how Serato DJ software uses these, but as Eric from Numark says in the video, kills would be an obvious choice.

Now you’ve seen it “in the flesh”, feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

    A monster controller.

Too bad for my poor pockets…

  2. Tom says:

It looks like its also build for traktor, i really really hope thats the case!

    • Phil Morse says:

No, it’s a Serato DJ controller – getting the jogwheel control right with Traktor would be the mission if you did try and map it that way.

  3. kraal says:

still need to open it up to traktor users

  4. Jon says:

Weird how all-in-one controllers keep getting bigger and bigger; it honestly makes me love my modular setup more, until it comes time to setup/tear down.

    • Jon says:

Also, I want a comparison between the platters on this and the jog wheels on the SX.

      [ link ]
      • Phil Morse says:

Utterly different. These are motorised and feel like using record decks, unlike (any) static jogwheels.

  5. speachless !!! def. the best tool on the market now !!! :)

  6. In my personal opinion, they might have gone a little bit over board with everything,in general with the second gen gear. Also aesthetics and ergonomics,I think, they went the wrong way.

    • Jomoh says:

I love the updated mixer. Not a fan of the pads

      [ link ]
    • DJ Hazit says:

I agree, partly, I love the look of this, those motorised wheels are just sexy. But yeah the iDJ live II and Mixtrack Pro II both look tacky and cheap, jog wheels look like toys and the build of them is ridiculous. Just stick with good old grey plastic in my opinion.

  7. Dj Demand says:

Is the weight and size the same as the old NS7 ?

Anyone know the release date? Prices and ddj sx size comparison? Thanks

  12. Looks DOPE, but heavy too.

  13. Cubix says:

Now we are cooking with gas :) .

I think i will need to come to terms with serato , i use traktor but do own serato as well although so far it always comes up as the 2nd choice software for me when i have a session at home.

This unit looks the business , i like it.

  14. Dj Demand says:

It’s good to see Dj’s are still interested in spinning platters vs Static platters.
As incredible as the DDJ-SX is, I always knew if they came out with the NS7/V7 equivalent there would be no question that I’m selling it.

    [ link ]
  15. Pdang says:

My Pioneer DDJ-SX just got really jealous and is beginning to feel lonely! It was a short coming between us but this thing makes me spin round-and-round for it!!. Although I wish it were as light and slender as my SX, there’s more to love with this beauty :) When can I have her?..

    [ link ]
  16. FTW says:

I dislike the use of mostly rubberized buttons on the unit, other than that it looks pretty sweet, although not too different from the pioneer unit aside from the spinning platters. Capacitive knobs? not my particular cup of tea, but I know some would enjoy it I guess. All in all it looks like a great unit, let’s see a DDJ-SX vs NS7-II showdown!

    [ link ]
    • ace says:

The rubber buttons are waaaaaay better than the hard plastic buttons on the NS6. Not only do the hard plastic buttons continuously break, but the actual switch under the button takes a lot of strain too. It’s funny how Denon who were renowned for their rubber buttons moved to plastic, and now other manufacturers seem to be seeing the light & moving to rubber.
I agree, the styling could have been better, but there’s no doubt what unit it is when you see it. All in all I like this unit, the price of it is gonna be a killer though. If they can match the price of the DDJ-SX then they have a winner. I just wish they’d make on compatible with Traktor.

      [ link ]
      • AdriaticBlue says:

So the buttons on the NS7 II are all indeed rubber? Very nice! I don’t like the feel of the hard click buttons on various DJ controllers. (And Denon need to keep the rubber buttons IMO.)

        [ link ]
      • Chuck "DJ Vintage" van Eekelen says:

Denon is still on rubber for MOST functions, just a few buttons have changed to plastic on some units, like play and cue on the SC2900s. Apparently it seems the plastic ones have a slightly better response, slightly more accurate. I have used Denon gear (amongst others) for more years than I care to remember and never had a real problem with the rubber buttons though.

Other than that, mostly a matter of taste and what you are used to I guess.

  17. It’s like the NS7 and DDJ SX had an awesome child!
I have the NS7 and I love it, and I just got the DDJ SX.. I do miss the moving platters, but the weight difference is astronomical (I’m a club/mobile DJ), and if this weighs anything like the original NS7, then I’m sticking with my DDJ SX

  18. atom12 says:

Same mistake as the NS6, transport controls to close to master & booth volumes

  19. ep says:

I’m sold on this unit. You guys are killing it with your coverage of the pre-NAMM product news!! thanks

  20. patrick says:

what kind of annoys me is that the trend goes to make Massively Large controllers aka ddj sx, ddj t1 and now the NS 7 – II to make them look like 2 cdjs with a mixer …

now there is plenty of mobile scratch djs who are in need of a small QUALITY controller with good jog wheels (aka cdj / sx jogs)

Solution : create a controller with the size or smaller of the VCI 400 ( equivalent in buttons not some shitty 350bug controller) + Good Jogwheels aka the ones from the DDj-SX

I mean it cannot be so hard to make one? @pioneer @NI

I guarantee you MANY of mobile djs buy this product !!! me for sure

    • DJXenoBlack says:

I own NS7 as well as smaller, more portable controllers, but customers do not like to see the DJ they hired working with what looks like toys. Not only do you get more professional features, but people tend to hire/avoid you based on the overall appearance of your set up. The NS7 consistently brings compliments from customers and guests, where the smaller units seem to make people think they could have hired their nephew instead.

With that being said, weight is a major factor for me as a mobile DJ. The NS7 requires a very solid table/stand, and in the case it is very awkward to lift without two people.

      [ link ]
  21. 1st it looks good my only concern is how big and heavy it will be. I like the size and weight of the ns6. for the mobile dj it may be too big and heavy it will be this or the ddj sx for me.

    [ link ]
  22. Hanz Dolo says:

Who cares about weight? Nothing compares to carrying a Calzone coffin loaded with 2 1200′s and a mixer let alone full amp rack and cases full of records…after experiencing that for over 10 yrs everything is lighter…it may be heavy but it’s solid

    [ link ]
    • Dokumentary says:

Seriously! Why is anyone worried about the weight? There are so many small lightweight (good quality) controllers on the market right now. If weight is an issue buy a Mixtrack Pro or an Ergo. Most people who buy the NS7 are coming from a turntable background. I’m currently carrying 2 Technics and an NS6. Just one of my TTs in it’s flight case weighs over 50 lbs. I can’t wait for this thing to come out. I’ll sell my NS6 that day! I’ll never sell my Technics tho. They will stay in the studio.

      [ link ]
  23. This for me would be my main console and the mixtrack pro 2 the back up or the one i use for bedroom/small events but im selling my left leg to buy these if i have to :D

    [ link ]
    • Cubix says:

If i chuck my right leg in we have a better chance selling them as a pair lol.

I am beyond impressed. Numark just took the gloves off.

  27. Mark Quest says:

    WANT!!!!

oh man – now we’re talking! Motorised platters for the aspiring & established scratch artists kick arse! They also give something to look at for the punters hanging around the booth haha
Sorry Pioneer DDJ-SX, I’m giving my money to Numark for this bad-boy :) Going by what hardware advances have been made within the DJing scene, I think this device will last at least 2 years before it’s outdated & trumped. Software is another matter entirely..

    [ link ]
  28. Numbdrum says:

Lets just hope Numark actually tests this thing before they start sell’n them. After purchasing a defective 4Trak & NS6 I’m reluctant to buy anything from Numark. I’d like to see a Pioneer DDJ-TX or a Traktor SX4!

    [ link ]
  29. DJ Peak says:

I remember originally looking at getting a Numark NS7 when they first came out. But the built in mixer couldn’t handle inputs so I settled for a Numark V7 and an Allen & Hearth Xone:22. The platter was amazing. So good that I actually picked up scratching.

Then I saw the Numark NS6 with it’s awesome 4 channel mixer with RCA inputs I just had to upgrade. My only issue was the lack of the vinyl platters like my Numark V7. So now I have been Frankenstein-ing my Numark NS6 and V7 with 2 seperate computers just so I can scratch with the platter. It’s comical how much I bring to a gig.

Now there’s this. I’m saving up all my money for this bad boy. Sell all my equipment because this is the last controller I will ever need. EVER. EVER EVER!

  30. DJRITM says:

I agree about the weight thing, who cares! i used to carry around my guitar gear (80 pound cab, 50 pound amp head, 3 10 pound guitar and cases plus a pedal board, and then help my drummer with his stuff and then the P.A) thats real weight issues. Seriously one 50 pound or so thing is not bad, its not a big deal for me anyway. At least i know with the current NS7 i have right now the weight Equals solid build. Cant wait for this to come out!

  31. Cliff Whitney says:

If it can be used as a DVS mixer than yes this would be the next “BIG” thing!
but what I consider is this….
if it can’t be used with both Traktor and Serato as a DVS input system? then it’s not very good at all….
And the reason for this comment is because Kontrol S4 is a way more capable mixer with DVS capability…. You can use CDJ’s and turntables plugged directly into then through live inputs….. Or you can use them in Traktor Scratch Pro with time code…..
I would love to see other companies offer the same kind of performance features….
And until they do NI’s Kontrol S4 still has the better feature set…
Kinda wish it came with motorized faders…. But that’s a very mute point when you can just hook technics up through them

  32. Bart L says:

I really don’t understand the appeal of rotating platters.

    [ link ]
    • Phil Morse says:

They will appeal to vinyl & scratch DJs, they’re not for everyone of course. Personally? I love them, but they’re not essential for me.

      [ link ]
  33. AdriaticBlue says:

    For those asking about price:

The Numark rep Eric in the DDJT video is now stating (in subsequent NS7 II videos on YouTube) that the unit will cost $1,499 (assumed US pricing) and will be released this summer. Eric must have been getting that question a lot at NAMM, rightfully so!

Nevertheless, you’ll hear the final word on that from Phil when it’s confirmed from Numark. :-)

  34. Sidihodo says:

Ns7 is all about vinyl feel. Weight is not a problem. I dont belive that eny body took their gear on their shoulder on a gig. Sx and ns7 are pro gears. I have a ddj t1 and i would love to buy a sx. But waiting an traktor version of it. Pioneer are trying to sell their 6000 dollar setup and always treat controllers like semi pro. But performance of a controller and an cdj on hid mode. COntroller wins

    [ link ]
  35. dj SoniQ says:

Woah! Good one with the pads! These should blow the ssx right out of the water. A side by side comparison of both the ssx & NS7II would be nice to see.
Not buying any though, still lugging my 3700s…..still its nice to know there’s a controller equivalent when I wanna switch.

    • Pdang says:

After a long week of thought over the NS7II vs. Pioneer DDJ-SX, here are some critical notes that The NS7II should address:

      - SX does not have a PFL EFX section (no cue buttons to listen to your EFX before the mix!). Make this available on the NS7II PLEASE via PFL buttons!!.
      - SX has a panel button to switch between tabs to show EFX, Video, Samples..etc (nothing on NS7II except a view button – why not add another button so that both “view” and “panel” buttons are in symmetry to the right side where efx “a” and “b” buttons are!)
      - SX has dedicated volume fader. NS7II should at least have a knob to control sample output volume.
      - SX has dual deck mode enabling both decks to layer as one (this mode is kicks-ass). Anything on NS7II like it?
      - A Pioneer style “slip mode” would be nice on spinning platters as well! Perhaps software can enable this feature.
      - SX has better UV meters with proper green and red peak LED’s. The red LED’s typical on Numark products don’t give you a sense of seriousness as most other proper VU meter’s! Even Gemini had proper colours on their earlier mixers!!
      - Why 5 hot cues?. It should be 8 now that Serato DJ is taking full effect (although having these separate from the pads is genius) why not just add 3 more buttons on either side!
      - Also, the vertical hot cue buttons should be switchable to user-defined MIDI to add more control!! And shift enabled too! Move the filter and touch buttons to the main panel!
      - That center-pin design to hold the vinyl down looks to be the same as the V7/NS7 which in my opinion can be flatter, smaller, and more aesthetically pleasant to look at/feel/touch while spinning (it also gives more real-estate back to the vinyl)
      - Load A/B buttons should be Load 1,2,3,4 as this is a 4 channel controller (NS6 also was a problem)! The SX has a better layout for this and it works MUCH better!
      - Why MIC2 on all 4 channel switches?. Try Aux, MIC1, MIC2, Phono for the switches. I’d pay more for the added convenience of extra inputs especially at this level!

I hope some developers @Numark find this as I think some of these very important comments could make a difference in the longevity and integrity of their products! Enough said. But, since this is a public forum, the competition may find this useful before Numark thus I’ll be happy to see what they have as an answer ; )

      • Phil Morse says:

Thanks for the detail. Numark’s team read the website so I?m sure they’ll see this comment.

I’m sort of pissed off about my recent investment in the serato/itch and newmark ns6 commitment.. We still don’t have that sample trigger pad and now they’re releasing totally new consoles for the itch replacement software! Let’s just say that I’m not turning cartwheels about serato right now.

I agree with one of the post above to see the red VU meters changed to the normal green /amber/red , apart from that i love it.

The current style All Red is prob just a little to much.
