Hi, i'm new to djing, as a 14 year old, i've done a bit of producing & a couple of nights ago i tried out someones CD Dj setup & i really enjoyed it. I am now going to purchase my own set up, but as i already have speakers & headphones etc. i only need the two turntables & mixer, what would you recommend with a budget of around £450, and also, why would have a digital set up hinder you're performance? as i have seen these set ups are a lot cheaper, thanks.
There is no way a digital set up would hinder your performance whatsoever unless you are doing turntablism (advanced scratching, beat juggling etc). Digital actually offers you a lot more flexibility and creativity. If you decide to go the route of vinyl then 450 will get you total garbage equipment. You really can't get the same results out of cheap turntables. If you've got a somewhat decent laptop then 450 could get you a decent midi controller and software.
Theres so many options that just come down to mixing style and personal preference. You would just need something simple to begin with. Check out Phil's guide to controllers: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/what-dj-controller/ I personally use Traktor Pro 2 with a Kontrol S4 (+ a few other toys) Serato Itch and Virtual DJ are other viable options. I think at the moment the best controllers are being made by NI, Vestax & Numark. For CD decks I personally don't like anything but Pioneer. Phil has said some of the later Denons are decent too.
Hey buddy i only started half a year ago and im now DJ'ing my biggest local club. Trust me when i say there is nothing wrong with digital. I learned on virtual DJ and still use the software today as im most comfortable with it. I also only use numark midi decks that set me back only a couple of hundred but do the job. Other DJ's will often shun you for using digital in clubs however what i would say to you is WHO CARES? Remember when playing to a club (which i guess is possibly your aim) you are not there for you or any other DJ you are there to get the crowd moving. Im currently messing with CDJ's that i borrowed off my mate for the pure reason im playing in a club soon that wants me to use them. It is alot different but you'll soon grasp it... let me know how it goes kid
I started off with my Traktor Kontrol S2 and Traktor Pro 2 very beginner friendly and easy to use. The manual is very helpful and there are a lot of online tutorials associated with the Kontrol S2 and S4. The S2 runs 2 decks while the S4 can run 4. I am very happy with my S2 and the Traktor Pro 2 software and would definitely recommend it. I bought the controller for $500 and it came with the software.
