Review & Video: vjay For iPhone & iPod touch

vjay for iPhone

Taking full advantage of the iPhone 5′s new longer retina display, vjay for iPhone is a full VJ package in your pocket…

vjay for iPhone & iPod touch review: Back in June this year, vjay for iPad grabbed our attention with its clever pairing of a djay-style interface with powerful video mixing on an iPad.

Pretty impressively, with vjay for iPhone & iPod touch, maker Algoriddim has now managed to streamline the vjay app interface to work on a much smaller screen, taking advantage of the technical advances of the more recent such devices. We already know that vjay is great fun on an iPad, but how does it fare on a smaller screen? Let’s find out!

Review: djay 1.6 for iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch

djay iPhone 5's new look

With BPM and pitch faders now right there on the main screen, the new djay app takes full advantage of the improved screen real estate on the iPhone 5.

A couple of days back we broke the news that Algoriddim had upgraded its iPhone and iPad DJ apps to take advantage of the latest leaps in iOS hardware and software technology. Headline improvements included iOS stereo cueing and in-app music purchases, but there’s more too.

We guessed that if the features had been delivered flawlessly, there’d be a chance that they could usher the market towards mainstream acceptance of iOS DJing. And as we’ve now had time to assess how well the new versions of the software perform, here’s our verdict…

Review & Video: Numark iDJ Pro iPad DJ Controller

Numark iDJ Pro review

Slot your iPad running Algoriddim’s djay software right into the middle of the iDJ Pro, and DJ in a way quite unlike you’ve ever done before. That’s the promise of Numark’s new iDJ Pro.

Numark iDJ Pro review: Ever since the iPad first appeared, tech-savvy DJs and musicians have looked for ways to use it in their performances. But there’s always been an awkward question as to exactly how it should be used – as a screen for a piece of hardware? As a fully contained DJ surface? As a third “deck” or sample bank?

Truth is you can use it in all of these ways, but Numark is the first company to come up with a DJ product where the iPad actually slots right there into the unit. While the iPad gives you a gorgeous interactive screen with innovative control over certain functions, the iDJ Pro simultaneously acts as a secure iPad stand and a set of hardware controls for your DJ software. In that way, the Numark iDJ Pro is quite unlike any other DJ controller out there.

Review & Video: Algoriddim’s Vjay For iPad

Algoriddim's vjay app

Get used to this logo, it will be coming to an awful lot of iPads as of today...

Can you remember the time you first touched your own DJ set-up, whether it was a traditional two turntables and a mixer, CDJs, or laptop and Midi controller? Exciting, wasn’t it? For me – as I guess for most DJs – that initial feeling of excitement, anticipation and awe has rarely occurred since those early days.

That is until now. I’m aware that this all sounds loaded with hyperbole, however it’s the way I feel about Algoriddim’s vjay app for iPad (update: now there’s also vjay for iPhone & iPod touch), which I’d had for a couple of weeks in order to prepare this review to coincide with today’s release into the App Store.

Video: Numark iDJ Pro Working Demo

When we broke new of the first-of-its-kind Numark iDJ Pro back at this year’s NAMM, it was a non-working prototype on display.

A couple of weeks ago at Musikmesse 2012, however, we got to actually see a working version. We made this video to show you what all the fuss is about.

Review: djay 4.0 For Mac

djay 4 for Mac review

Behind the deceptively simple exterior, djay for Mac just got some pretty advanced features.

The djay software platform has come on in leaps and bounds in recent months… if you’re an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad user, that is. The poor old Mac version got left well behind as Algoriddim, the software’s producers, clambered over themselves to keep up with iOS’s rapid advances.

So while the iOS versions are pretty much universally respected, the Mac incarnation (this is strictly an Apple product) has come in for a bit of stick, with “no waveforms!” being the enduring criticism. Well, it’s been a long time coming, but today djay for Mac got one hell of an update. And the launch price is US$19.99. Bear that figure in mind as you read our word-exclusive first review of djay 4 for Mac…

Review: djay For iPad 1.4

djay for iPad 1.4 review

Effects, improved library features, iCloud compatibility... these and more have been added to the latest version of this pack-leading app.

The latest version (1.4) of Algoriddim’s djay for iPad app ticks a lot of empty boxes, bringing it ever closer to being a very useful and mature DJ solution. (Update: You can ready our djay for iPad 1.6 review here). While it will probably not convert any Serato or Traktor fans, it does feature more functionality than you may expect to get from an iPad app.

Of course, there are many apps which claim to be for the DJ, usually split between turntable-based and waveform-based interfaces. djay is (at the moment) the best of the turntable-based apps out there. This is unsurprising really when you consider that Algoriddim have had djay working on the Apple devices since 2008, when it was first unveiled at Musikmesse paired with a MacBook and a Vestax VCM-100 controller.

iCloud DJing Is Here

Vestax Spin with iPad

Buy tunes on iPhone, add cues and BPMs at home on your Mac, DJ at your gig on your iPad? It's all possible for the cloud DJ.

A DJ buys his weekly music from his smartphone, tablet PC or laptop, adding it straight to his cloud storage online. He then uses a version of his DJ software on any of his devices to add cue points and analyse and fix BPMs on the songs he just bought. Again, it all syncs automatically to the cloud.

When he’s next DJing, he again fires up one of his devices (doesn’t matter which) to DJ from. His fully updated library is waiting for him, all of his previously added cues and BPMs present and correct…

All You Need To Know About DJ Splitter Cables

A DJ splitter cable

A DJ splitter cable (this one is made by Algoriddim and Griffin).

Beginner DJs are often told about a secret “hack” that means they don’t need to buy an expensive sound card in order to use their DJ software properly. They may even find out that this little DJs’ trick involves a DJ “splitter cable”…

And here’s where the problems usually start! Where do you get one? Will this iPod splitter I got at the airport do? No? Well, what exactly do I need then? How do you set up the software to work with it? Why doesn’t mine work?
