Controller Clinic #14: Improving The Effects On Virtual DJ LE & Mixtrack

Mixtrack Pro effects section

The effects controls on the Mixtrack Pro: What you actually get depends on the software you use it with, and with Virtual DJ LE, your options are quite limited.

Following our recent tutorial video on when to use DJ effects, Digital DJ Tips reader John Spiegel writes: “I use a Numark Mixtrack with Virtual DJ LE. In the effects section there is no filter, either hi or low pass. I was wondering if there’s a way to either get around that or fix that.

“Also, on the echo section, I can’t quite figure out how to control the timing of the echo. When I turn it on it just goes crazy. I realize this is sort of vague, but any chance you could help me out?”

Your Questions: Can My Mixtrack Pro Work With Traktor Pro 2?

Mixtrack Pro Traktor Pro 2

The Mixtrack Pro 2: Comes with Virtual DJ LE in most of the world, but you can use it with Traktor too. Here's how...

Reader Arjun from New Delhi, India, writes: “I just ordered my first controller, the Mixtrack Pro, which ships with Virtual DJ. Though it is a great software, I was wondering if there is a Traktor 2 mapping available for the same. Since I am a beginner DJ, I won’t really require four decks at the beginning, but I would still like the flexibility of using Traktor 2 and Virtual DJ, since I am adept at using both the softwares.

Can I do that? What will I need to do if i want to switch my software when I want?

Download Virtual DJ 7 Home for free

Virtual DJ 7, the award-winning DJ software, is now available as a free download for the first time to all DJs, in its Home format.

Virtual DJ Pro 7 Review

Virtual DJ Pro 7 review - 4 decks

Virtual DJ Pro 7 with 4 decks running.

Virtual DJ 7 Review: Virtual DJ sometimes gets a bad press. Maybe it’s because the manufacturers and developers, Atomix, began many many years ago making some seriously toy-like DJ software of the same name (mind you, it would run on anything).

Maybe it’s because the company doesn’t have “pedigree” by not being an all-round electronic musician’s software developer like Native Instruments. Maybe it’s just because the “Virtual DJ” name itself gets “real” DJs’ backs up.

Virtual DJ 7 Trumps 4 Decks with, erm, 99

Virtual DJ 7

Virtual DJ 7 with four decks running.

Apart from its video capabilities, Virtual DJ has been lagging behind in the headline features department against Serato and Traktor for a little while. That’s all been blown out of the water with the news that Virtual DJ 7 – currently in beta and previewed at the Atlantic City DJ Expo 2010 – can handle up to 99 decks, configurable by the user.

Now it makes more sense that the American Audio VMS4 and the Denon DN-MC6000 – two heavyweight four-deck controllers – are happy to align themselves with Virtual DJ, as it seems that the new version of the software wil have the ability to fully utilise all of the features these next-generation controllers have to offer.
