Reader Hugh writes: “My current laptop is a piece of crap! It works fine when I use Virtual DJ 7 with the two-deck skin, but now I’m into four decks and the 1.66GHz just can’t keep up. The sound gets distorted or the program just fails to run altogether. I need to upgrade but don’t want to spend a ridiculous amount of money.

“So I was wondering, what are the top laptops for DJs? You know, with portability, reasonable price, enough memory for programs and music, and enough power to be able to manage four or even six tunes at once, and sample decks, effects and so on. What do you recommend?”

Digital DJ Tips says:

There are so many laptop brands and models out there that it’s pretty hard to come up with a definitive list (well, I could: MacBook Pro. Take your pick: 13″ or 15″? Thing is, MacBook Pros are not exactly cheap).

So apart from the MacBook, which you’ll not hear much bad said against, I’m going to throw this one open and ask the readers what they recommend… or don’t recommend.

So, over to you: Which laptop do you use for DJing? Are there brands or models you particularly recommend, or don’t recommend? What are your secrets for trouble-free laptop use when you start to pile on the decks’n’FX? Please let us know in the comments…
