Over To You: How Can Paris Hilton Call Herself A Top 5 DJ?

Take a look at the video clip here (make sure you’re not eating anything at the time). Now, I’m truly not sure how Paris Hilton manages to rate herself in the top 5 DJs in the world: Fame? Amount of money paid per gig? Is she actually saying “I am one of the top 5 most famous people in the world who also DJs?”

Personally, I don’t begrudge anyone the right to run with whatever they’ve got; after all, she wouldn’t get booked if people didn’t pay to see her. But – and I’m trying not to be flippant here – deciding you want to be a DJ, mastering sync on Traktor, then lumping yourself up with all the greats is at best inadvisable, at worst, highly insulting to those who’ve put years into their craft and still feel too humble to speak of what they’ve achieved.

It’s just a sign of the times, I guess, and I’m sure nobody at all believes that it’s “just” Paris Hilton, rather “Team Hilton”, that is behind her highly marketed/marketable DJing career – I do however think she should show some respect and refrain from silly throwaway one-liners like that.

What do you think? Is there any way she can justifiably claim this? Does it matter anyway? Is there room for starlet superstars alongside the “authentic” underground and everything in-between? Feel free to share your considered thoughts in the comments.
