In our weekly “Ask Phil”, Nick writes, “I am starting to lose my passion for DJing. I think the DJ scene is too full of wannabes who talk a good set. My question is: how can I get that passion back?”
Digital DJ Tips Says:
An important first step in regaining your passion for the craft is figuring out how other DJs can affect something that’s yours, and that should endure. Don’t give anyone that much credit: other DJs can’t cramp your style unless you let them. Focus on the music and what you love about DJing, not the ego or hype abundant throughout the industry because that road leads nowhere.
The barriers to entry have been lowered: the shrinking cost of DJ equipment, instant access to music, technological advancements, and the plethora of knowledge available to young DJs has levelled the playing field, and anyone wanting to give it a shot can. That’s not going to change anytime soon.
This lets people who lack true commitment and passion get in the game due to very few hurdles to jump. As a result, those that worked hard for years feel frustrated and chalk up newfound cynicism towards a flooded market.
There will always be others trying to take the easy route into something you’ve worked tirelessly at, so what you need to determine is how your DJing differs from them. There is a pile of noise, how will you fight your way to the top?
As described in our core values, we believe everyone deserves the chance to succeed in DJing. True, some of them won’t care, do it for the money, and water down the art, but in the end they just distract from what really matters: the music. Focus on how to improve your skills, adapt, stand out, and give that crowd something to remember you by.
Always maintain your integrity. People should do things because they’re passionate about them – if they get trapped in all the nonsense that has zero bearing on who they are as a DJ, it might be time to reevaluate. Notice it, and go do your thing anyway. Passion is what will keep you in it for the long haul.
