Mixcloud has quietly rolled out an update to its iOS app that includes the ability to watch Mixcloud Live streams.

Mixcloud Live is Mixcloud’s beta DJ streaming platform and is totally legal for DJs to stream on, but until now there has been no way to watch the streams apart from on the desktop app.

Streams load fast and quality is great, and chat works well too, but unfortunately it is not possible to play streams in the background like most music apps, and when somebody on an iOS device clicks on a share link, it doesn’t appear to open the app, just the website. It is also not possible to open the app and search for a DJ’s livestream.

This all befits a beta function, of course, but if Mixcloud could quickly improve search, make links open the app not the website, and get that background playing sorted, it could help adoption of this new streaming service and solidify a lead for Mixcloud in this relatively new space.

Note that it is not possible to stream from the app, so you’ll have to use your computer to do that – check out our instructions on how to stream to Mixcloud Live.
