Full Course Details

Here you’ll learn the principles and techniques needed for creative mixing, and sense-check that you’re on board with what’s needed to get the most from it. Take a little while to work through this part, even if you’re desperate to jump into the mixes – it’ll be worth it.

What’s covered:

  • To be able to master mixing you need to start with the right mindset. So here, we cover the overriding principles that will underpin your “mixing mastery”.
  • Then we identify the seven techniques you’ll need to understand before you can do the majority of the mixes in the course.

One of the big things power mixing can accomplish for you is big BPM changes – much bigger than the +/-5% or so that most DJs manage through careful (and often pretty tedious) beatmixes. In this section you’ll find lots of methods of making BPM changes that go way past the obvious and simple.

Step-by-step mix demos covering:

  • Changing BPM with a sync-locked loop
  • Changing BPM in a breakdown | word play
  • Disguising a BPM change through maintaining a vibe
  • Disguising a BPM change with cue play | correcting key with pitch play
  • Bold BPM change using loop roll

The power mixing mindset and techniques taught in this course come with a huge advantage for DJs: They give you all the tools you need to move from genre to genre in your DJ sets confidently and frequently. There are basically two ways you can do this: By making the switch as unnoticeable as possible, or by making a show of the genre change. In this module, you’ll learn all about how to do it the first way.

Step-by-step mix demos covering:

  • Genre change through use of similar elements
  • Genre change using loops & filters
  • “Keep it simple” genre change
  • The “Got you with that one!” genre change
  • The “crossover track” genre change
  • Using matching basslines to smoothly transition

Here we learn how to make big, bold genre shifts, that nonetheless are technically perfect – and sure to turn heads. DJing is a balance, and for every seamless transition that keeps your dancefloor groovin’ along, there’s an equivalent mix that shows everyone who’s in charge.

Step-by-step mix demos covering:

  • Genre change through a bassline “tease”
  • Tone play genre change
  • The completely extreme genre change
  • Using acapella outros / beatless intros to transition
  • Genre change through similar riffs

Back in the vinyl days, DJing was limited by the technology available. But digital DJing blew all of that wide open, as you’ll see from the extreme examples here of live mashups, remixing, multiple deck wizardry, tone play and more. You’ll learn how to take things to the current limits of what’s possible in digital DJing – all the while, of course, taking your audiences along with you.

Step-by-step mix demos covering:

  • Live remixing with cue play, vinyl brake & slip mode
  • Mashing together two tracks that are already linked (acapella routine)
  • A tone play & acapella mash up across four decks
  • Live intro mashup with an offset beatjumped loop
  • Live remix by beatjuggling two copies of the same tune
  • The seesaw lyrical mashup

Take this course whatever your DJ level with these extras:

  • Foundation lessons for beginners – This mini course covers  basic counting, phrasing and manual beatmixing skills
  • Beatgridding in-depth – This 3-parter on track preparation covers the basics and troubleshooting, elastic beatgrigding, tap and tricks
  • Follow along practice demos – All the mix demos isolated and annotated for quick reference for practical sessions
  • Slow motion close-up mix demos – The same practice demos then also slowed down to 75% to make sure you don’t miss a beat in learning and practising
  • Bonus Red Bull 3Style Tone Play Routine – DJ Carlo Atendido shows you how to emulate his Red Bull 3Style World Final routine with a clever mash up of the Star Wars theme and Usher.
