PUFFY
DJ Puffy just produced one of our best DJ routines of the year. Read on to find out why it was so good… and learn how you could learn to DJ like this.

Now, if you haven’t seen it – this is what creative DJing is about right now. DJ Puffy won the Red Bull Thre3style World Final just before Christmas, performing a DJ set that had scratching, juggling, controllerism… and yet kept good old fashioned musical programming at its heart. It’s one of our favourite DJ sets of the year, and if you haven’t seen it – do!

Want to know how to do it?

This is what we call all-round DJing: Not just technical skill, but a really thought-out track selection too. He’s actually employing (relatively) basic techniques, but doing it really well. The exciting thing is, you can learn those techniques. We know, because we’ve taught ’em to hundreds of DJs via our online courses:

There are actually two sets of techniques here for you to master:

  1. The controllerism techniques – Our Mixing Power Skills course covers all you need to know to learn how to do the vast majority of what DJ Puffy did with his buttons and knobs in this routine. It is on sale right now, so you could start learning instantly
  2. The scratching techniques – Our annual Scratching For Controller DJs course takes any DJ from the ground up to being a truly great scratch DJ. It includes an advanced course from DJ Angelo that takes you way beyond DJ Puffy’s techniques. It opens again Fall 2017, but you can register your interest without committal here

Remember, the biggest skill here is in the tune selection which comes from a passion for music. If you love music then you simply need to learn the techniques involved here so you can put together routines like this yourself. So check the links above to learn more – we could be seeing you win this in a year or so…

• Our regular Friday Roundup column returns in two weeks’ time.
