Technics just posted a cryptic image on its Instagram account showing a partially obscured turntable. The company recently announced that it is going to hold a special event at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on 7 January 2019, focusing on the venerable SL-1200 turntable series.

Technics is no stranger to CES: It released the high-end SL-1200G (with an eye-watering price of US$4000) at CES 2016 and the more affordable (but still expensive) SL-1200GR at CES 2017.

Just for fun, here’s what the Technics Instagram image looks like when brightened up. Looks like a 1200 or 1210 to me…

Technics, which was once shuttered and now back in the game, knows this: It released the absurdly priced SL-1200R in 2018, a turntable that looks more Bauhaus sculpture than utilitarian music playback device. Could Technics be gearing up for yet another turntable release, and will it finally be priced within reach of DJs who don’t have plans of cancelling his or her retirement? We’ll keep you posted as events unfold.
