Today we hear from an electronic composer who wants to give his music to DJs… how should he be getting it to you? Let him know in the comments…

Got a great “Over To You” this time. Andrew writes: “I compose electronic instrumental music. I am not a DJ. Indeed, I know nothing about DJing. So why am I here? Because I want to ask: how do composers give music to DJs for them to use?

“I don’t think that my compositions are the typical music of a DJ; I am not beat driven. But who knows? Maybe a DJ could do something with them to make them suitable. So to cut to the chase I have a lot of questions:

  1. What format do DJs want? Wav? MP3? A certain quality of bits?
  2. How would I give it? How would I get in contact with a DJ for this?
  3. What rights would I retain to my donated/shared music?

Digital DJ Tip says:

Great question! Firstly, I’d say let DJs worry about whether your music would work for them or not, getting it out there is always worthwhile. As you say, people may see there’s something in it for them – and you never know…

A SoundCloud channel is a good place to start, but I want our readers to give you their advice as I feel it will be more valuable coming from the crowd than coming from me.

So, over to you: What would you advise Andrew? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
