Technics just announced its new SL-1200 MK7 turntable at CES 2019. It’s a deck aimed at DJs and it continues the legacy of the legendary SL-1200 which was last updated back in 2010. It maintains the classic look that the Technics SL-1200 is known for and throws in some new features including a new “Coreless” direct drive motor, an all-digital pitch fader with a ±8% / ±16% range, detachable audio and power cables for easy replacement, the ability to play in reverse, and an all-black matte finish. Pricing is set at US$1200, and will be available from May 2019.

Evolution, not revolution for the new Technics SL-1200

Technics knows that it doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel in order to make a splash. If you’re too young to remember, the company almost single-handedly kickstarted DJ culture with the introduction of the SL-1200 and SL-1200MK2 back in the 1970s. It was instrumental in the formation and evolution of hip-hop, especially when it came to scratching, which is why 1200s are revered by battle DJs to this day.

So while the SL-1200MK7 is hardly revolutionary, it looks to be a step in the right direction for the storied company which, having been revived just five years ago, released three very expensive turntables aimed at audiophiles, leaving DJs out in the cold.

The SL-1200MK7 could be the product that lets Technics make amends: it’s being marketed as a DJ turntable, and while no price has been mentioned just yet, we’re willing to bet it’s going to be a lot cheaper compared to the absurdly priced SL-1000R.

Immediately, companies who are going to be keeping a close eye on the new Technics SL-1200 MK7 include Pioneer DJ, which dominates in pretty much all other areas and also has its own turntable range, and Reloop, which has made somewhat of a name for itself as a turntable provider for DJs. In fact, just a few hours ago Reloop announced a brand new turntable called the RP-8000MK2 for Serato DJ Pro.
