We all know the obvious places (although feel free to namedrop them here) but I’m also wondering if you have hidden gems – please where you get great service, or find under-represented genres, or that you just happen to prefer for other reasons. Would love to know YOUR favourite places for buying digital music for DJing…
I usually check http://www.djshop.de and http://www.djdownload.com before buying, I prefer flac or wav format and the prices are ususally almost 1€ less per track than beatport or traxsource, but unfortunately they don’t have everything.
Hey all. Traxsource first and foremost, unbeatable for soulful and deep house, Beatport, Juno (remember when they first started and the weekly boxes of fresh vinyl arriving, I miss that!) and iTunes isn’t bad at all for fully released stuff.
To be honest I get the majority of my stuff from Spotify these days. Their download bundles can work out really good value – as low as 50p per track if you buy a bundle of 100. I can find most of what I need on there, although they are lacking quite a few good independent dance labels. Occasionally I’ll be a bit cheeky find a load of stuff on DJ Download/ Juno etc and then get the same tracks from Spotify for under half the price!
Not sure if they offer downloads in the USA yet though.
My favorite is http://www.afrodesiamp3.com. I also use Traxsource, iTunes, and Amazon. I’ve only used BeatPort and Juno once each. I’ll definitely have to look into Spotify to see what these bundles are all about. Do they provide 256-320kbps music? My one problem with Amazon is that it downloads in variable bit rate… i’ve gotten tracks that were 160kbps before… and they weren’t any cheaper than those at 256kbps 🙁
I don’t think you can see what bitrate the spotify tracks are before you download them, but they say that the ‘vast majority’ are 320kbps, with the rest in 256 – I would guess/ hope that all new stuff going up is 320.
Phil – I know, the expiry is annoying! I guess it’s an attempt to make a bit more money from people forgetting to use them. I try and spread out my downloading over the month and download say 25 a week (i tend to buy a bundle of 100 every other month) – then set a reminder on my phone a couple of days before they expire so I can make sure they all get used in time.
