KeymasterWhat laptop do you use for DJing (make, model)? And what’s your favourite and least favourite thing about it?
Mine is a MacBook Pro 13″ mid-2009. Favourite thing? Build quality. Least favourite? Screen size (I’d like 15″ for my poor bespectacled eyes).
You?

MemberLenovo G550 (with added RAM).. To be honest, I have no favourite or least favourite things.. it works and I like it. Nothing special.

Favourite thing: Fucking indestructible, it has had beer poured on the keyboard, been dropped and even sat on and still come out kicking.
Least favourite: Screen size as well, would like it to be a higher res, can make it hard to see track selection sometimes.

It’s not just you Phil. I’m 28 with 20/20 vision and already wishing I had a 15″ two for itch in 4 deck mode =)
I have a current Gen MacBook Pro 13″December 22, 2011 at 8:58 pm #11803Todd Oddity
ParticipantGateway ID47 H03h – 2nd gen i5, 750 gb HD, 6 GB ram, 1 GB video all standard out of the box…
Favourite thing: 14″ screen in a 13″ case (best of both worlds)
Least favourite thing: silver keys with black lettering not always easiest to see in dark room (fixed with a USB gooseneck lamp), and USBs are towards the front which is a tad annoying.Despite that, I love this machine.

MemberAcer Aspire, 2nd gen. i5, 750 GB HDD, 8GB Ram, 1+ GB VRAM, 17,3″ screensize and it’s still not big enough for four decks in Traktor ๐ (btw, I bought it not only to DJ, so the large screensize is important in other matters, too).

ParticipantHp Pavilion G6, I love that it was only $600 (for 4gb ram and and i5 2.6 processor). I dislike that it has a very small battery life, especially when using Traktor.

ParticipantMacbook Pro Late 2006 Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo 2,33Ghz 3Gb Ram 15,4″ 500Gb HD 2xBatteries
I bought it early 2009 used from a porfessional photographer who has had it in field so it had had its turns in the ground
But I checked it carefully and all worked well. It costed me about 1000Eur/1300USD it was way below half the price of a new one ๐Favorite thing, It always works and do what it scould do, it is fast and build quality is excellent.
I have dropped it two times and it still works and the design is excellent!Cons was when I used it with Cubase or other heavy music programs I found the screen to be a bit small.
But I bought a used Mac Pro 8 core and 2×24″ samsung screens so that is not a problem anymore:-)December 23, 2011 at 3:54 pm #11839Ivan P

Phil,
My MBP is the same model as yours and the best thing about it is that my wife is not allowed to touch it! ๐
(and I like the trackpad finger gestures feature too)

MemberIm using a Macbook pro Early 2011.. I am wondering though i still have 280gb worth of free space on my laptop…Since most of my tunes are on my external hdd which is 320gb as well and has around 100gb left of free space. I am debating on if I should get a new HDD 500gb 7200rpm or just even a 320gb 7200rpm and making my old hdd on my mbp as a back up as well having 2 externals wont hurt i think. as well as making the 320gb 5400 MBP a back up clone for my MBP as well..
Should I wait a bit or should i just pull the trigger? even though budget is tight these days? coz I plan on getting some studio monitors and some other gear.

Things I like:
-efficiency
-clear-pleasing screen
-it simply works without problemsThings I dont like:
-always have to have it plugged when DJing, its battery wont last at all
-Doesnt seem to be a sturdy device, I fear if I ever drop it, it will break to pieces, so Im extra cautious with it
-a bit heavy and the screen looks a bit large in the DJ Booth (15.6″) but that was my decision for having a clear look on my software
-stupid HP logo light in front, I have covered it with a sticker because it seemed like a “Hey, I want to be a Mac, am I close?” thingDecember 26, 2011 at 9:39 pm #11925Angelo Medina
ParticipantWhite 13″ MacBook , late 2007 , favorite thing: color hehe, least favourite: battery, something’s wrong with it and only lasts like 1 hour or so, maybe I have to replace it.

I love the trackpad too. But I think the thing I love day after day is the insanely practical power supply – I use it in two rooms and it’s great to be able to unplug it at the transformer and plug the little plug onto it saving unplugging it from the back of the telly in the living room.

ParticipantMacBook Pro 15″ mid-2009, 1TB 7200rpm RAID 0 HDD, 8GB RAM
pros:
cheap as hell (bought it used 3 months ago for $1000)
fast as hell – i upgraded the HDD and RAM myself, now my Mac runs Logic Pro/Ableton Live with a bunch of plugins like a boss
decent screen, backlit keyboard
cons:
fairly unreliable storage (RAID 0 = 2 x dangerous) i look forward to buying an SSD soon
low-res glossy screen. i wonder what hi-res matte screen will be like. current screen is a little cramped for Traktor 4-deck in advanced mode.
2 USB PORT!!! Tell me why Apple? i had to buy a 10 ports USB hub and carry it around all the time
slightly deformed in the corner… it was a nerve-wrecking 1 meters fall. oh well, my bad -
