April 4, 2017 at 11:15 am in reply to: Vestax VCI-380, is it a wise purchase to make in 2017? #2545241Ian WilliamsParticipant
Just another note to agree with Aaron & Todd.
I also owned a VCI-380. It was brilliant & i loved playing on it. But i got rid of it last year, as i was concerned about a future OS update turning it into an un-supported paper weight.
If the Primo delivers on what they’ve promised, it really does look like the controller to wait for. But if you can’t wait, the Denon MC4000 or 6000 would do the job nicely.
Ian WilliamsParticipantAh! …I presumed you started with a purchase from iTunes (256 aac),as that’s what the O.P.was discussing.
In that case, carry on! ?
Ian WilliamsParticipant@Todd Oddity.
Why are you converting from one lossy format to another? (m4a to mp3). You’re losing quality, plus as far as i’m aware, all the main DJ programmes play m4a’s just fine.Ian WilliamsParticipantYes you could go in to an external mixer, but it’s another pice of equipment that isn’t really necessary.
Plugging one of these in would be easier!

Ian WilliamsParticipantI know your original post said “not SX2”, but if you can find the extra cash, i’d recommend that over the old SX.
You’re a mobile jock & you want decent mic channels. …the early SX’s had issues with the mic channels & ideally need an addditional attenuator (15db or so) on your mic lead. This was fixed on the SX2
Have a read through some of these links;
Ian WilliamsParticipantWith the DDDJ-RR, you’re pretty much locked in to RekordBox (no serato support)
That may or may not be a bad thing (depending on your point of view), but it’s something worth thinking about.
I owned an RR for several weeks, but sold it on. Additional Reason’s being;
1. Although it’s got line/turntable inputs, it’s not actually a standalone mixer. Those inputs are routed in to Rekord box. (or very limited standalone functionality “no EQ” if you flip a switch on the back of the controller)
2. Same with the mic. It’s got 3 band EQ, but you need the software running to get it. (As above, will work with no EQ if you flip a switch)
All of the above works fine, but i lost power one night (Sound limiter at venue kicking in) & found myself dead in the water with no music or mic till my software “found” the controller again. I could have got to the back of the controller to switch my mic directly to the output, but the switch is tiny, & the booth was dark.
Back to an MC6000 now! ….a shame really, as The RR with Rekordbox is great fun to DJ with.

Ian WilliamsParticipant@DJ Vintage ….i was about to call you out for talking as much rubbish as the original poster, then i googled 432Hz & read a little bit about 432Hz tuning.
So it turns out that it really is a thing!
Probably not relevant to DJing software, but Yep! ….definitely a thing!
🙂
Ian WilliamsParticipantI use an 11″ Air with Traktor, & it does the job perfectly.
I use it with an external screen / keyboard / mouse when it’s docked at home, but the lappy screen is sufficient for gigs (I’m a Traktor user, so the space bar takes me in & out of my main collection).
Ian WilliamsParticipantI think it’s only really something that experience can teach you. So probably best to tag along with a few UK DJ’s & see what they’re playing.
Interestingly, I’m looking at a similar scenario.
I’m possibly moving from the UK to Ireland, & intend DJing there. So im also very interested in any general differences people have found moving to a new country.
Ian WilliamsParticipantNot as simple as that though, is it?
I’ve got an MC4000, & I regularly use it with Traktor. The factory mapping for Traktor is pretty good, plus when using Serato i find the metering quite confusing on the MC4000.
So you could argue that the MC4000 is a better buy as you can use it with Serato / Traktor / Virtual DJ etc. where as the S2 is pretty much tied in to Traktor only.
Ian WilliamsParticipantNot necessarily.
I brought one of these last week, with a view to using it for this very purpose.

I do take your point though. My plan isn’t probably one that most people would choose to do.

Ian WilliamsParticipantDon’t forget, RekordBox also lets you float off the library/browser as a seperate window.
If you’ve got an external monitor, you can move your library to a 2nd screen.
