I wish the moderators would just make a few sticky threads for stuff like this to make it easier to find. I’d be interested in finding out if there is any sites that offer formats other than mp3 such as flac. (Price comparison would be nice as well).

I would agree that it’s better to use the software that comes with the controller. In this case, that’s Serato. If you want to verify that, here’s the link: http://www.numark.com/product/mixtrack-pro-3.

I would like to clear one thing up though. Virtual DJ offers a “controller” edition (Virtual DJ 8 plus “controller”) on a per controller basis for less than the “pro version”: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html.

Select your controller from the drop down menu to see the price. For a Mixtrack 3; the price was $99. However, as previously stated, your hardware will work better with the software it was designed for (Serato).

    Hey DJ Vintage,

    Thanks for the Suggestion.

Duplicate File Remover was easy to use and did a pretty good job. I currently have about 70 files left on my main drive that are still showing as “duplicates”. However, many of them have bad Meta Data. So that’s something I’ll still have to go through and manually fix, but at least I’ve gotten rid of a lot of garbage.

There’s still a lot of work to do, but at least this tool helped minimize the amount of time it would have taken otherwise. Overall, I give this tool a 4.5 star rating (5 stars being the highest).

I’m mainly looking for a decent tool that will help me identify and eliminate duplicates, preferably on a quality basis (keep the highest quality an delete the rest).

I’ve been at it with beaTunes for a few days now, and I’m starting to think I need to look for a different tool. BeaTunes is great for certain things, but it’s not really handling duplicates the way I had hoped for.

If you have a suggestions for any the ones you put in the “some good” category; I’m interested in which ones you liked and a brief reason why you liked it.

my only concern is what about the 2.9ghz i7 vs the 2.7ghz i5?

Honestly, unless the i7 is Quad core 2.9 GHz and the i5 is dual core 2.7 GHz (a difference of 200 MHz); there’s no real difference in CPU performance (at least none that you’ll really notice). However, you would notice a difference between the 2012 ATA Hard Drive (300 or 600 MBps transfer rate) and the 2015 Flash Storage drive (Solid State Hard Drive).

Although the Solid state “flash drive” is smaller in storage; it’s way faster in performance. So by choosing a model with a solid state hard drive, you have more speed performance over a ATA hard drive because the ATA drive has to spin up, so the mechanics of how the drive works would slow you down more that what could be made up for by a slightly faster CPU. A solid state “flash drive” has no moving parts; so the only thing limiting the drive is the class or speed of the memory.

If you carry around a small portable drive such as a Western Digital My Passport, you could choose any of these and be fine. The My Passport drives come in up to 3 Terabyte configurations. The 3TB version sells for about $130 on Amazon. You also may want to consider buying a protective case for the external HDD such as a Pelican Micro 1020 Case.

If I had to choose between the 3 you mentioned; I would pick the 2015 MBP w/retina. Here you get excellent performance and if you plan on doing more with the video’s you mentioned; they’ll look awesome.

The only other thing I would suggest you at least consider is an external CD/DVD combo drive such as: http://www.apple.com/us/search/CD+DVD+SuperDrive+USB?src=globalnav. You really don’t need to get the one made by Apple. However, it would probably work the best with whichever Mac Book you decide to purchase.

You could also search on NewEgg for USB external CD/DVD combo drives (http://www.newegg.com/External-CD-DVD-Blu-Ray-Drives/SubCategory/ID-420). Many of the products here have customer reviews and you could always do a Google search for more reviews on any particular model. I’ve always had good luck with the LiteOn brand and the Plextor brand of drives.

I have looked at and am considering other brands – EV, JBL, Cerwin Vega, Yamaha, etc.

I currently have a pair of JBL speakers (JRX-112M). Granted these are passive and intended as monitors, but the sound produced by these is harsh in the high range to the point of turning me off from the brand. I would suggest trying to compare speakers in store if possible.

Also, you may want to take a look at the HD Series on Mackie’s website. Here you could consider: 2 HD1221’s and 2 HD1501’s or 2 HD1221’s and 1 HD1801.

    Progress report:

I added my library to beaTunes. Once it scanned the HDD; 2 options came up, Analyse and Inspect.

Analyse: This took 2 full days to complete, but added BPM, Color, Key, and some other stuff.

Inspect: This took several hours and came up with several different categories of issues it found with my library:
Consistency, General, Sorting, Spelling, Title. Each category has a number (how many issues it found in that category).

Now, the “bad news” – the program doesn’t allow you to fix the issues without purchasing a license. Guess I’m off to spend some money. Just wanted to let people know the limitations of the free trial.

Thanks for the beaTunes reference. I just did a google search and found a review written by DDJT. http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2014/08/review-video-beatunes-4-music-fixer-playlist-app/

    For Virtual DJ 8 Compatibility:
    http://virtualdj.com/wiki/VirtualDJ8%20Controllers.html

    Denon MC6000 MK2 – Supported
    Pioneer DDJ SX2 – Supported

If you are familiar with VDJ and want to keep it; you could use either controller. I probably didn’t make the decision any easier.

    Denon MC6000 MK2 = 9.2 pounds (4.2 kg)
    Pionner DDJ SX2 = 12.7 pounds (5.8 kg)

The main difference I see between the 2 is that the Pioneer has “sample / beat Pads” and the Denon does not.

    Have you used it?

    How well does it work?

I searched for software, but most seem to have conflicting reviews; so I’m looking for something that people here have tried and found to work well.

Here are some of the results I have come across (no particular order)

TuneUp – Add on for iTunes and Media Player – many reviews as of version 2.8 (and later) that it doesn’t work well. Company responded to one post saying that it has changed ownership as of 3.0. Still many complaints after 3.0.

AllDup – Several reviews state that it works well, but user interface is complicated.

Duplicate Cleaner – Mixed reviews between working and not working. Multiple people comment that the interface is complicated.

DupeGuru Music Edition – Mixed reviews of working and not. Some complaints that it misses files. Some complaints about difficult interface.

Similarity – Mixed review of working and not. Some complaints about “advertised as free” but free version has serious limits and purchase was needed to get functionality. Some complaints about interface.

There’s a lot of potential problems any time you plug into power at a venue not “designed” with having a sound system in mind. You could have been on the same circuit as the microwave and every time the kitchen used the microwave – poof… or maybe the fridge, condenser cycle kicks on – poof … I’ve heard of rain water getting into parts of the electrical and causing issues. The potential problems of a venue not having enough power are really endless.

Here’s a few things you didn’t mention that might help trouble shoot…

    1) Are you on 120V power? 240?

    2) How many Amps was the outlet you were plugging your power strip into rated for?

    3) Are you using a Walmart special power strip or are you using a professional grade power conditioner?

You may want to consider investing in something like: http://www.furmansound.com/product.php?div=01&id=PL-PRODMC

It will tell you the power provided by the wall outlet (volts & amps) you plug into as well as the draw (amps) from your system.

Never trust a “Walmart power strip” to plug your equipment into – EVER!!

I posted on the VDJ Forums asking if VDJ supports RB library integration and got a big fat resounding NO. So, If I want to do stuff on the fly; it’s iTunes (how disappointing).

Looks like I’ll be using iTunes after all.

    DJ Vintage:

I get what your saying as far as keeping the master unprocessed FLAC and that is definitely the way I am leaning since I currently do not use iTunes and for the controller I want RB is essentially mandatory.

I do not have a NAS yet, but I do have a few external HDD’s. My current library is almost 200 GB of mostly MP3’s and I would say 90% of that is 320 KBPS. I don’t use all of that for DJ’ing (just trying to give an idea of the current “pool” I have to pull from).

I can see why converting to MP3 would be an attractive way to go for conversion since just about everything can play MP3’s now.

I guess I could always try iTunes at some point in the future, but I think for now; I’ll stick to only the software I have to use and not throw extra stuff I don’t need into the mix.

I’ll follow the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid) until I am comfortable with RB and the controller I buy and then think about possibly adding iTunes.

Anyway, thanks for all your input.
