Still plenty of dance music released on vinyl, well in advance of digital copies sometimes. Vinyl sales are up again last year, certainly in the UK.
I’m now mainly a digital DJ but have a vast vinyl collection and still very much use and appreciate it. It’s not just old schoolers, it’s a format, to be used, just like a CD or digital audio file.
backtothefrontParticipantSoundcloud mainly, despite the new version, I still prefer it to Mixcloud, which I do have an account for but don’t use due to restricted bitrates (assume this is still the case). Most of my DJ/Producer peers use SC, so collectively it makes sense.
backtothefrontParticipantYou could also hire an MC, such as this fellow:

backtothefrontParticipantIf you have the HD space and affordability, uncompressed audio is definitely the best way forward, however it is very difficult to audibly tell the difference between a 320kbps MP3 for example, particularly in a noisy club.
backtothefrontParticipantIt can be used effectively as an effect, but sparingly IMHO.

You rebel you, Terry 😉 heh heh 😉

Not sure if Future Jungle and Rave Breaks will completely break through in 2013, it doesn’t seem to have the same clubbing appeal as DnB and Dubstep are having at the moment. I won’t dislike hearing some more of it though, so keep it coming 🙂
Thanks for the feeback, v kind.
It is still very much underground, but it is increasing in popularity. My show is mainly Soulful & Deep House but venture in to the RB/FJ genres occasionally. We’re also moving across to a brand new radio station in a few weeks and I’d recommend listening to some of my colleagues as well if you like D&B, FJ, RB, Bass Music etc, many run their own labels/have releases out, so it’s always upfront, brand new music.
backtothefrontParticipantInteresting topic to me as I’m currently looking for some budget-ish in ear phones for use at work, currently tempted by the SoundMagic E10’s which got rave reviews on What Hifi.
As Terry said, it is so subjective and depends on what music you listen to etc. I hope to test out a few pairs tomorrow to see what I prefer – mind you, anything will better that the std Apple phones I’m currently using, they’re awful. In terms of DJing cans, still can’t look further than my trusty Technics RP1200’s, 17 years of gigging and still going strong (with a bit of tape here and there) 🙂
Ref Monster/Beats split, I won’t be in mourning. I’m not a fan at all, damn awful, low end biased, over priced ear jewellery in my opinion, wouldn’t touch them personally. If I saw someone DJing with them, I’d find it quite difficult to take them seriously given all of the much better and balanced headphones on the market.

I see tens if not hundreds of the same threads on a daily basis, and its threads like how do i mix better, how do i use effects properly, how do i mix other genres.
10 years ago there was no internet, there was no social communites other than actual social events or going to the record stores. Even then there was not much of hey can you help me places for DJs or producers to go…so how did they all get really good? By FREAKING DJING!!!
What i am trying to say here is that there is no WRONG or RIGHT way to do anything that we do…it is an art form. Imagine a painter who likes to brush using circle movements, is he better or worse than someone that does left to right movements or up and down strokes? The whole idea here is to be creative…that is what DJing in a nutshell is…being CREATIVE, taking multiple finished products and making them YOURS not mine not Guettas, but JUST YOURS!!!
Asking Questions like when do i use a flanger, or how do i mix different tracks, is alright but nothing that anyone in this community says thats directly related to DJing is written in stone. With the advancement in technolgy these days the way Everyone mixes is totally different.
Now on the flip side asking questions do get you further ahead faster as there is a wealth of knowledge from more experienced people. A lot of the seasoned people in here never learned how to DJ by using forum boards or Youtube…it was spending the countless hours holed up in their bedrooms and just doing…making mistakes, screwing around having a great time…but in the end all we did was DO.
Bravo, I often think this and mirrors my experience of learning to DJ all them years ago. There’s nowt wrong with asking questions and I’ll happily answer if I can positively help, but nothing beats just getting on and trying, self learning if you will. Good post Hee.

I only did a small house party this year at a friends, arrived at 18pm and got a nice spicy chilli with cold beer, so then I played a chilling set from 20-22 then let a newbie take over, who was actually quite good (very nice DnB and house mix) while I got to drink some nice wine (LAN Gran Reserva 2004) and smoked a nice cuban cigar (H.Upmann Corona Major), got to watch the midnight fireworks for once. Went home not too late and was in bed by 4 or 5 I think.
So it was a success in my eyes 😉Sounds like a very pleasant evening to me Terry, right up my street 🙂 Happy New Year to you.
backtothefrontParticipantTotally agree with HWJ & D-Jam. Personally I just ignore all this mainstream ‘EDM’ shenanigans now, 2012 was full of it in one way or another. ‘EDM’ and it’s mainstream popularity is a US phenomenon IMHO and the masses will move on to ‘the next big thing’, the underground and new scenes in dance music will continue to bubble along as always, this is where I focus my attention.
backtothefrontParticipantIndeed, all lists are subjective but I still would say the RA list stands up to better scrutiny than the DJMag poll – probably as many of the DJ’s listed I tend to follow 🙂
backtothefrontParticipantTerry_42, post: 33187, member: 1843 wrote: Way to much. 1-2 christmasy songs per hour at most. Or people will lynch you… (at least here in Europe)
This definitely 🙂
OP, never DJ’d a work’s Xmas bash, but I have been a to fair number over the years… usually its standard top40/pop across the decades which always, and I mean always, includes something by Shania Twain… which is usually time to depart or at least pop outside for some fresh air 😉 As Terry said, just drop the odd Xmas tune, back to back Wizzard, Slade etc etc would not be good IMHO. Enjoy.
backtothefrontParticipantFriends parties probably to start with (going back almost 20 years!) but after that, made friends through the clubs I went to/record shops/mates etc but also have ‘cold called’ bars which can work. Basically integrate within the scene you wish to be a part of, makes a huge difference IMO.

Beyer, Gesaffelstein, French Fries, Brodinski, Loco Dice, Nina Kraviz and Destructo ftw.
😉 How you doing shr3dder? Hope all good with you.
So moist ref Glastonbury 🙂
