so last year i got a focusrite external soundcard, it is ok, but is a bit noisy when nothing is playing, plus it doesn’t have a pre-amp on it.

I want to get another external soundcard that has more channels and its own pre-amp.

then i will sell the current one that i have.

    suggestions?

ok… my use in traktor for playing trance.

    1. is the point where the beatgrid is set from (gridmarker)
    2. is where i start if a long transition
    3. where I start for a short transition
    4. any other use
    5-8 not used.

    which video is this?

I have the same mixer as he does (A&H XONE:4D), although his is customised by A&H, and they say they won’t make any custom ones for anyone else.

I too play trance like PVD, and want to get going with just more than one track to the next.

I also have 1200 technics deck and traktor v2 timecode. plus an iPad2 running TouchOSC, and a Novation LaunchPad, which is the hotcues in traktor (bottom row, 4 pads for each A&B decks) the rest are freely assignable in Ableton Live, where i play my idents, and other sound effect samples (Halloween for instance, which i have a collection of samples i play over the breakdowns)

I’d like to take this further, but don’t know where to go from here… I know I have the tech to be able to do more, but need some help and pointers to get something going.

I have played keyboard with some tracks I know… maybe i should do that again?

resolution of controls is not just the hardware… there are settings in software to determine this.
I know traktor has the settings for a controls resolution, as I use it, but as for other software I don’t know.

I’m going to get the xone k2 (put my name down for one from the shop in manchester)

I have found my old cheap usb midi cable, which I have got to work with my tower.

so, my setup will be like this:

Laptop USB to Xone 4D to run traktor.

Tower USB to xone k2 which will control ableton live and play the samples (idents) when broadcasting live.
line out from K2 to 4D, to mix all audio.

Monitor line output of 4D to x-fi card in tower to broadcast.

midi keyboard via seperate USB midi cable

if I want to go mobile, then simply the k2 and traktor in internal mode.

I figured if I need a line in to record, then for the rare occasion I’d need it, changing the USB cable of the 4D into the tower instead of the laptop.

Laptop running traktor for DJ’ing, Desktop/tower running ableton to produce music and stream live video. Allen and Heath xone 4D, and a Novation LaunchPad.
old casio keuyboard, which i now just use for inputting notes to ableton live and playing live with Vst Synthesizers

My livestream channel has video of me DJ’ing using this setup.

I think a xone K2 is my next purchase (to be able to connect to my tower and leave my 4D connected to my laptop)

I’d like to get more info on EQ’ing really. I see a lot of the US DJ’s are really big on EQ fiddling for effect like Theo Parrish, Juan Atkins, Derrick May etc. Where as in Europe movements are kept smaller – seen Ame and they do tiny movements to EQ. Dunno who is right as I enjoy both styles.

no method is right or wrong, but I’d keep to 2 rules if you want a smooth neat mix…

    1. never have it so both eqs are too much against each other. (most obvious example is both bass eq up at zero)

    2. change the eqs in time with the phrases of the music.

my way of mixing trance (my main genre)

currently playing deck with outgoing track (call it A) all eq set to zero (12pm)

incoming track (call it B), once cued up all eqs turned off fully to the left (my allen & heath Xone:4d has total kill with the eqs)

I bring the mid and highs in until i can just hear them. with the outgoing track.

I’ll then increase the mids on B, whilst taking out the mids on A, but adjusting them finely up or down to keep both tracks balanced.

at the point where more cymbals / percussion start on B, swap the highs so b is zeroed, and a is taken out. done on the one beat.

then depending on how the basslines are, I’ll either fade between them or just swap on one beat

You then have B in fully with the remains of A as just mids, which you fade out and get to no sound by the same time the phrase finishes. like a 32 bar section for example.

if I don’t have enough time left to mix, or I’m trying to get more tracks in the timeslot for the set, or i’m mixing Happy Hardcore

I’ll do the above, but start track b with the eqs set from where I would swap the highs in the above.
    then follow the above.
so as you start B, the mid is enough to hear it but not overdoing it against A
on B the highs are zeroed (12pm), and on pressing play you take out the highs on A
bass is taken out on B and is full on A
adjust the mids and either fade or swap the bass.

    I hope it makes sense.

I started out playing keyboard (not piano). tried producing, but the technology wasn’t that good.
I eventually went into DJ’ing, where it has been until recently where I got into production as the technology has got to the point of actually working for me.

Psy and goa… go together, but from my perspective, goa has more samples in it, and is slightly more dynamic, and you could say it’s slightly techno influenced.

I found out about this too late…
    I live in Stockport.

I’m a trance DJ (also play drum’n’bass and Happyhardcore, but not regularly)

I use traktor pro 2 2.0.3 on my laptop, with an Allen and Heath Xone:4D
I also use a Novation Launchpad to trigger samples. in Ableton Live

I broadcast online Sundays 8-10pm GMT on http://www.radio4by4.com/trance and http://www.tranceformers.net

My 4D is a bit big for taking places.
I have an alternative using my Android tablet. (if the developer (hexler) of TouchOSC gets a version with custom layouts enabled)

Using TouchOSC as it is, doesn’t allow me to properly map it to traktor.

If he does get it developed, then my launchpad, laptop and tablet will fit in my laptop bag, and I only need a portable usb soundcard, to headphone cue and send output to the PA system where I am.

I have recently finished producing my first track a 138bpm peak time uplifting trancer.

If you Dj and like a genre, but feel it has gone commercial/mainstream you don’t have to play all the commercial tracks. you have the choice of what to play.

Trance for example used to be the uplifting euphoric melodic style. (think Cafe del Mar – energy 52)
It has expanded to so many variations since then. some of which, I’d even think it might be a house track.

quite a lot of trance DJs will play the commercial sing-along vocal tracks and just top 100 beatport tracks

I will go through all the new releases and pick out what I like and fits my style of DJ’ing.
Yes, I will play commercial tracks that everybody involved with the trance scene knows, but that is if i like it, not just because it is popular.

That is how I have my own style, and hopefully stand out.

As A DJ, you don’t have to let commercialism completely take over what you do.
