Thanks for the tip. Right now I’m looking at the Magma Laptop stand reviewed here. Looks like it fit the bill.

Funny thing with online mix contests is like…I can do a mix in Ableton, cut’n paste and add FX and all, make it sound amazing, but could I do it live? This is why I appreciate small mistakes in peoples online mixes, shows me they actually did it in one go.

Time Warp. It’s a floor banger for 8th graders. Or maybe I’m just old.

Well, HD are cheap these days. Me I go AIFF 1) the quality + meta tagging, 2) I can fix nicely in Ableton if I need to, I can re-edit in Ableton as well. Only time I go MPW 320K is when I don’t have the AIFF or WAV option. But I am an old audiophile.

I once read up on the history of Jamaican music and how competitive sound systems were and how much secrecy and espionage was done around the music played. Back when I was a vinyl DJ I know part of what made DJs popular was the ability to drop a killer track that no one else had or was aware of. Though I didn’t get much in the way of pre-released white labels I did spend hours in the record store digging through crates for those one offs that seemed to fall under the radar. Records weren’t cheap and so there would be lots of great 12″s that just never got much if any exposure because DJs had only so much cash to spend which tended to go towards the sure-fire dancefloor bangers. For me if it sounded good I played it, didn’t matter who or what. Hell, I was one of the few DJs in my area and time that had an extensive French House collection that made me stand out from other DJs.

I think what annoyed me in particular as of late was a DJ who copped one of my mix’s image graphic, called his mix the same, even tried to use the same font, then put up his mix without a tracklist.

I think that vid was more a poke at superstar DJs in general, Guetta, et al. not necessarily just Avicii. I remember a film marketing course I took and was shown how a crap movie can be marketed to actually turn a good profit, scary. I think we are in the height of the age of marketing, it’s like a new religion. It’s not enough to be a great DJ, you gotta be pro marketer. Back in the day it was more word of mouth based on your skills alone. DJs would get recognition but not to the extend you have people just standing there staring at the DJ booth. I mean, if the DJ is doing their job then the patrons are lost in the music, dancing their arses off and having a good time. The DJ is behind the music, not in front of it.

In one sense I understand there will be a lot of entries and there has to be a way of cutting the wheat from the chaff but yeah it becomes a spamming contest of “OMG like my mix!” I mean hell, you can get a lot of likes and listens just with a picture of a half naked woman.

Thanks for the input. Yeah I’m not normally overly protective but I do spend a lot of time hunting tracks and I just wish everyone would just follow the rules on Mixcloud. Now I kinda miss those white labelled LPs, heh heh.

I dunno what I laughed harder at, where he looks like he’s doing something with the DJ gear but really doing something else or the point where he “Kills them” with the drop.

But yeah, maybe not Avicii money but I’d settle for 1/2 of what Deadmau5 makes.

Speaking of “killing it” in related knews from home: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/05/18/29_sent_to_hospital_from_avicii_concert_in_toronto.html
