Eliah HolidayParticipant
I still pass for 30 so I’m good, though I might loose opportunities for giving customers dirty looks when they request I play whatever nauseating dance music kids listen to these days lol. “You know what, I’ll play you Voodoo Ray instead, and you’ll like it!”
Eliah HolidayParticipantYeah + or – 5 BPM is like absolute max ceiling. I usually stick around 1-3 BPM. I guess if I’m mixing harmonically then I’m just maintaining that relationship with Keylock if I adjust the pitch. Though now that I think about it I suppose I could also use the change in key to my advantage if I need to mix two songs that are not naturally harmonically sound. I think it’s like…One semi tone away from being in key or something I remember from music class.
Eliah HolidayParticipantWow, just saw a $1.00 price difference between a 2013 track labelled Progressive House and the same track again in 2014 labelled Tech House.

I think for the money and application the 7506 can’t be beat. Only downside for me is I’m use to the ultra light AKGs and I find wearing heavier headphones for extended periods fatiguing.
Eliah HolidayParticipantHey thanks. I’ll check that guy out.
Eliah HolidayParticipantX1 + Z1 + F1 is good, add another X1 to taste. Me I went X1 + CMD MM-1 + F1 + Audio 10 because I want the flexibility of a 10 in/out interface plus the MM-1 is 4 faders with EQ and filter assignable knobs.

Much better than ATH-m50s. Otherwise for DJing I’d go for the cheaper Sony 7506. But yeah, if I had the money HD-25s II.
Eliah HolidayParticipantDid a little practise session today. I’m discovering that for myself I do indeed have to make a few more fader adjustments inbetween twisting the EQ knobs to keep volume levels steady. Too I think you can kind of create a break of sorts between the two tracks where go EQ down to a few elements, match that with your new track, then build back up to the full track.
Eliah HolidayParticipantI’ve been getting into using the EQ and filter a lot more in mixing. At this point it’s almost like I’m mixing purely by EQ and filter. I can’t say I got it right at the moment as I am still learning the ins and outs (pun) of this technique. Essentially I have one track playing, I cue up another track listening to what stands out (the kick and/or bass and/or HH…etc.) and then drop the EQ on those elements. From there I raise the line fader for track 2 (crossfader already center) listening to how the new track sits in with the playing track and EQ adjust if needed. I use to go faders full and start mixing over from there but found I usually need to drop track 1 down a notch to keep volume levels even. From there I usually start at the Hi EQ and swap them out (assuming track 2 has upper range information to swap out that is) then I go to mids and do the same. Finally I slowly remove the bass from track 1 while raising the bass on track 2 all while making sure there are no big jumps in volume. I use the filter to tweak this process whenever I need to drop out an element faster as well sometimes I fade out a track via filter. I haven’t messed around with the gain that much. I think the idea with gain adjustment is around the the filter as a filter will cut more energy than an EQ will and so if you hi-pass your incoming track you might need to raise the gain and then as you filter back to normal drop the gain. Of course all this is subject to the tracks you are mixing. Too the quality of the EQ and filter you use makes a difference (I currently use Traktor’s P800 setting for EQ and the Z filter). If you watch Nina Kraviz you’ll see her do a considerable amount of knob tweaking as she blends in and out tracks.
Eliah HolidayParticipantToo I can’t complain that much about digital purchase prices. Buying 12″ records back in the day was like…$15 or more a pop!
Eliah HolidayParticipantActually what pool does Tech-House, Minimal, Techno? I’m not really up to spinning top 40 dance.
Eliah HolidayParticipantYeah, I’ll check out the pools. Though I tend to want to DJ with aiff or WAV.
Eliah HolidayParticipantHeh heh, well I guess I get an association with Happy Hardcore which I can’t stand. Too, I’m a moody basterd, lol. Kidding aside I think I’ll go with the full name. I see a lot of DJs use their real names, though obviously a catchy DJ name that’s easy to remember obviously does well for marketing. I think about the success of Deadmau5; the name and headgear ( well, music too obviously), Daft Punk too…Now that I think of it a cool DJ name and a helmet seems like a good recipe for success.
Eliah HolidayParticipantThanks for the responses. Yeah, I considered just the full name. I use to simply go by DJ Holiday, but I see there’s actually a few who use that now. On a similar note have any of you used more than one DJ name? Like I mainly do House/Techno but I also love dub and have a whole theme night for that planned and was considering using a different DJ name that fits the theme I’m going with for that night.
Eliah HolidayParticipantWell, for example if I wanted to promote my mixes on a social medium like Youtube or Soundcloud and someone is already using that DJ name and has a following…What I don’t want is someone searching for me and getting someone else instead and any subsequent confusion.
