As a dj yes you can… as a producer only… no way… not any more. were is the money coming from? beatport… if you do well you might get 5000 sales and what percentage do you think you get from the 1.30 after you label and beatpot take there cut. I had a chat with BT before a gig in london .. and i ask him why do you just not spend all your time in studio and he said that he only makes money from touring… and this is BT.

I can’t tell a difference between beatport 320 and itunes tracks, so I usually go for iTunes as Beatport is more expensive, even with a coupon code.

its really mad cau alot of people talk about wav beening to expensive and itunes having cheaper tracks… 10-15 years ago when people earned far far less… they had to pay on average £6 for a vinyl now they dont want to pay £1.30… were is the sense in that?

the reason i wouldnt buy tunes of itunes is… its only 256kps rather than 320. I cant say for 100%… but as far as i know if you purchase music…you can do what you want with it but you cant resell it.

If someone does not do that I don’t listen to the mix, period. Recommend others to do the same. If a DJ is too lazy to make a playlist, then most likely the mix is not that special, either.

I hear what ure saying but for me a mix is about taking people on a journey… what kind of journey am i going to take you on if you know what tunes are coming in?

If you think like that thou then alot of other people do.. so will include if i post a mix.

I believe I have seen different mixes around where people charge like $0.99 or $1.99 for it, but is this ok for a dj to buy an original version of a song, mix it up and then sell it and will some of the money then go to the original producer? I mean if I buy an original version then it’s illegal to share, but if I mix it to a club version, then I can distribute freely or even sell for own profit?!?! And how much do you need to alter the original to call it a mix/remix?!

On the same note. If you take two versions of a song, lets say a funky remix and a club mix, and then mix them together. First off, would this be a mix, remix or a brand new version that you can call whatever or should this kind of mixing just be kept to the dance floor and never be distributed/shared!? If shared, surely someone might hear that there are parts of let’s say the funky version in your mix, so should you call your mix something like funky club re remix to prevent someone to accuse you of stealing from other mix’es or is this generally accepted between djs, as long as its not a lot?! I’m not sure it’s clear what I’m trying to ask about. Lets say you sample a beat from a Carl cox production. If you use just a little in your own mix, can you then call it your own or will you definately have to call it something like Carl cox rererereremix ?! Will you have to get and buy permission from Carl cox .

I’m sure there is a logic explanation to all of this, and ofcourse i can start googling it, but I thought it would be a good discussion for the forum. I hope someone will enlighten me ;-).

are you sure your not thinking of professsional remixes were artists get paid to remix a track? it sounds like your really new to dance music? i think you need to do alittle googling and then come back to the forum with a better structured topic… check out two links below for alittle insight on what your tryin to describe…

I was really skeptical, but think that it is really well-designed for DJ’s I put a fair amount of time into customizing things on the site, but think that the result is very professional and such. At least it has helped me get some gigs!

For me your going about it the wrong way… changing ure name to get followers is wrong. pick a dj name that you like and has some meaning to you. practise your ass of and get a mix done every week for broadcast. Kent Sandvik made a good point… djing is about doing it in the real world.. mixify is good for the reason that it gets you mixing and building sets very week…so you are learning and developing. Play the tunes you love and the people will follow you if your having a good time enjoying what ure doing….if on the other hand you are constantly check ure followers and other peoples followers then you are losing what its all about…

    happy mixing

DJ Menno, post: 31837, member: 3768 wrote: Much said already, I would just add this : a very important thing about mixing is when you end the song and when you throw the next one.

A good mix needs breaks, melodic lines without bass, double drumming (throw the first beat on the upbeat of the playing song). The songs themselves and the way you blend them can already add a lot to your mixing.

When using effects, I generally use echo for beautifull female voices, a little dose of flanger just before throwing a beat everybody knows and is expecting, and loops to get out of a song when I see no exit door 🙂

althou very true…alot of what you have said is the basics of djing…. if you simply just mix intro to outro you are not going to keep the energy in the mix. Personal i think you may get off with a flanger in trance but thats about it… very overused effect. Just from your writing i imagine you have a pioneer mixer….lol

Loops are a vital place of modern djing… you can use elements of a tune that ure going to take in… as added rthymn.. for example a perc loop and eqd it so it fits in mix then then you mix the next tune in the listener has already got that sound in there heads for a few minutes so makes ure mix sound alot better.

On a good day sasha can have four tracks playing… now if mixing techno its alot easier to do this.. but he mixs melodic layers which is simply of the hook… it takes a complete understanding of harmonics and keys.

now with digital djing… you gotta be doing something else with the free time available to you with the use of the sync button… be that adding layers… dropping samples..extending mixes with loops.. loop juggling… or maybe getting some visuals on the go… and on that note if you do, dont have it running from same computer.

    Happy Mixing.

It’s like anywhere else, technically you should only play things you have the rights to, but it’s up to the label to flag it. Which I doubt happens very much there. There’s an option to put in your tracks, just like Mixcloud except you aren’t forced to do it. I always do whenever I upload a mix anywhere, spread the word on your favorite artists and all. I use Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Mixcrate and House Mixes. I find I get the most hits at House Mixes though. I get the least at Mixcloud.

They cant copyright tracks in a mix…. its only if you do short mixes or fades…which technical isnt really mixing. In summary if the tune can be downloaded and cut out of mix then they can take them down. Just mix well…which is what you should be doing anyways…lol
