I grew up playing the drums. I still play the drums. I started with a rainbow colored child's toy xylophone as a young child. Then a triangle. Then a snare drum. Then a 5-piece set.
I've always loved audio.
I began recording using cassette tapes and in-built mics on boombox/stereo equipment. I moved to dubbing cassette tapes to make mulit-tracks. I moved into the digital recording world by first using the standard microphone input on a desktop PC in the 90's and recording using basic software. I learned to create my own mixes and mixtapes using a cassette adapter to dub tape-to-tape for non-digital playback. Eventually I converted to CDs, and then to completely digital. Around 2001 I began recording using Pro-Tools on an original M-box. I have since upgraded hardware many times and now prefer to use Ableton Live.
I don't consider myself a DJ as much as a sound controller/creator and manipulator. The little skills I have came more from recording/engineering/producing than from DJing.
I did grow up with one of my best friends DJing in and out of clubs who has since gone on to make a pretty big name for himself. Since our childhood I had always played with his Technics and mixer, and know some of the basics from that. I have always experimented with DAWs and audio manipulation software, and had some exposure to Virtual DJ prior to 2013, but in 2013 I decided to purchase another MIDI controller that was specifically for "DJing" - the Numark Mixtrack Pro II - I messed around with it, Serato, Traktor and Ableton Live for a bit and then gave up. My motivation to create/make music happens in waves usually. After having not having motivation to "DJ" for a while, in the end of 2014 I decided to get back into "DJing" and in the beginning of 2015 I upgraded to a DDJ-SZ.
