Thank you both for your considered replies. I gave up with the laptop, couldn’t get it to work together at all but with a fair amount of f*ckery I managed to get it working on my main machine.

In the end it was quite an elaborate setup! Main PC running 2 cameras and audio over USB, with laptop using the mixer’s second USB to run and record sound through Traktor, and also use 2 Traktor decks with an X1 on the two spare channels on the DJM. This is something I will do again as I’ve always preferred to have a third deck for acapellas/loops/tools but a third CDJ is fair too expensive for that reason.

DJV, I was using the line in (USB) of the DJM as a Windows recording device, and while I managed to get Rekordbox to recognise it a couple of times, OBS was not having any of it. It is line level (well, just about) as you say, which is indeed what I wanted, complete with a 500ms delay if you were to listen to speakers via the computer at the same time as mixer master.
I’m going to go through your advice piece by piece though and see how I get on.

Tooddity, I found those vids, they’re exactly what I wish I’d found a fortnight ago!

I would probably choose and X1 and F1 in this scenario and build up from there.

    Not essential, but almost really.

Are you playing in bars and using their equipment? Or are you expected to bring your own?

    Didn’t think so, thanks.

I can’t even get the Circuit to sync with Traktor over USB neither. The Circuit manual is rubbish.

Nice! I missed it, will try and find it now.

Are they all sharing the same power point? You want everything coming from the same circuit ideally, or more specifically, earthed via the same means. Different circuits will likely mean a small difference in earth loop impedance which can give small differences in working voltage and cause interference. My speakers/amps share the same plug socket as the mixers.

Not familiar with those two models, but I guess it depends what features you want.

On my desk I have a Samson Graphite 25 (I think) which isn’t hammer action but has full size keys, transport controls and a few pads and rotaries. I find it a bit too much hard work to set up properly with Ableton though. It’s good enough for just coming up with ideas on though. I also have a Keystation 88 which is absolutely marvellous, built like a tank and full, hammer actions keys and loads and loads of rotaries. I obviously much prefer playing on that.

Very much personal taste. I have Audio Technica monitor headphones and wouldn’t use anything else. I definitely wouldn’t want some bass thumping cans; kick drums are rarely completely atonal and “dull” enough that they mix together lazily.

Not much to add, but this is a great thread. I can also vouch for CCleaner. Store bought laptops also come with loads of bloatware you’ll need to uninstall.

I’m glad you agree and I’m not just being selfish. Most of my library is commerciallly available but I have a few things on there I’ve ripped from my vinyl collection, or producers I’ve approached on SoundCloud and been sent things that aren’t otherwise available. Also lots of loops, intros and acapellas I’ve created or chopped up myself.

To add another element, we are putting on our own event in two weeks where we will be playing opposite rooms, so will be in a sort of competition with each other, and if he has Shazam’d or otherwise noted my songs, it will increase the risk of us playing the same songs in the different rooms.

I’m hoping the venue change their mind now so I don’t have to make excuses!

Cancel that – I seem to have got it, everything just needs its own USB connection rather than going through the mixer’s one connection. Works a charm with 2x CDJs, DJM and Kontrol X1.

Actually though, maybe it IS using the LAN cables and switch for the Pro DJ link?

Ok it’s fair to say I’ve no idea how I’ve done it and taking it to do in a club in a non-starter at this point, but whatever I have done at home is pretty cool.

Could you let me know how you got your DJM working with Traktor?

I have a full Nexus 2 setup which I’m effectively trying to get working as a controller.

I half-managed to get RKB DJ working via one USB from the mixer, but only one deck worked and I gave up quickly.

After a fresh PC install, I’m having a play with Traktor. With just the mixer plugged in via USB, no joy. I’ve plugged one of the CDJs in via the USB on the back and it is now working in HID mode, including hot-cues and stuff. I can’t figure out how to get the mixer working though.

Ideally I’d like to play about using a Kontrol X1mk2 and the CDJs as a complete Traktor unit.

Nice one, I didn’t think LEDs would be bright enough so you’ve stopped me making a mistake there!
