HA! I just picked up a CMD PL-1 after buying and returning a bum CDJ 1000 and I like it. I think that company probably doesn’t do itself any favors by making such varied quality components.

Here’s one from last night. It’ll still be live for 10 hours. The sound quality shifts because I’m sure that’s Periscope’s way of dealing with copyright but you should notice the difference between the sound quality here and the sound from an internal iPhone mic. Don’t hesitate to swing by and kick me some hearts.

That seems like a lot of money. You probably could buy anything. An outside the box idea but maybe a Xone:23C that you can start out using with keyboard cue points then add a modular jog wheel deck like the Behringer CMD PL-1 later?

So, I have another quick question in case this topic gets picked up. What’s the best way to hashtag a Periscope DJ set? My Periscope sets are chill, deep cuts, crate digging, practice sets. Nevertheless, I’d like to attract as many viewers as possible because… just, because.

I had the exact same experience with the 4000 on my MBP using both VDJ8 and Djay Pro. I loved this unit. It sounded great, worked great, felt great… It was going to be the last controller I ever bought. Originally, I had the first unit I bought (day one as soon as it was in stock) fixed under warranty. That made it worse by actually breaking something else, so I talked them into sending me a new unit. My gig at the time was a 4-hour gig and randomly during my next gig, same mixed midi issues as you describe. I dumped it on eBay and moved on. Shame.

Something I figured out was that if you have a USB-enabled turntable like one of the direct drive Stanton’s you can just plug it into your computer and make that your timecode disc. It’s really easy in Virtual DJ. You can even use instant doubles to mix with one turntable. I would imagine that would work in conjunction with your controller.

We’re in different cities, we may even be in different countries. We’re definitely at different levels professionally because I mostly play in bars and small janky nightclubs where there’s no tech, only managers, and owners that stupidly look down on controllers.

Please don’t do that. There is absolutely no way to upconvert an audio track. Once it was compressed down to anything below 320, that data is lost forever. The best thing you can do with your tracks that are lower than 320 is to leave them alone or try to find new, higher bitrate versions.

If you were tech savvy, you could try looking into iTunes match, as I had great luck replacing many of my lower bitrate songs with updated versions of them but I don’t think that tedious trial-and-error approach will work for most people.

Finally, I would recommend lossless in the form of flac or m4a for any new tracks you rip but always remember that once a song has been compressed into a lossy format, that information is lost forever. You should google around for explanations of lossy and lossless compression.

    Peace

Yeah. I should have picked up one of those but they weren’t on my mind when I ordered my CDJ. I needed to familiarize myself with a CDJ anyway. My main plan was to buy a second cheap turntable so buying a slightly used 1000 MkIII at a similar price seemed like a decent alternative to a turntable with questionable QC. For the last year, my bedroom setup has been one Technics+timecode and instant doubles in VDJ along with a mixer with onboard soundcard. My gig setup over that time has consisted of everything from just the mixer and laptop using hotkeys, to a dvs box on club PA, to two tape decks, to all-in-one controllers. As long as I can headphone cue some kind of way, I can rock a party.

I love controllers. If it were up to me, I’d always use a controller. I’ve used controllers for 4 years now but needed to build up, and become proficient with, a timecode system so I can gig at places where that’s the only option.

Interesting. I think my biggest criteria would be for there to be no drag or drift like when scratching. Because I planned on using another turntable, I wasn’t planning on an instant start (controller style) when hitting the cue or play button. As long as I can hold the track and throw it in like a record, I should be ok. Timecode works so well with vinyl that I had really high hopes for a CDJ. Oh well, I’ll report back after it arrives. I use VDJ 8. Other than apps on the iPhone I’ve always used VDJ.

I’m experiencing the exact opposite. I DJ’d every party I could from 7th grade through college in the early ’90s then gave it up until 2012 when I bought a controller as a gift to myself for finishing grad school. Since then, I’ve gigged and established a presence online but over the summer I moved to Oakland, California and can’t get anyone to let me DJ. It’s maddening. Unfortunately, my only buzz comes from seeing people dancing when it’s a club gig or heads bobbing when it’s a bar gig but I seriously can’t get anyone who books for bars to give me a gig. Hell, I even hit up a place that had Yelp reviews mentioning good DJs “who obviously liked music” and the owner stressed that there is no way I would ever actually be paid by them. Like, it made me want to puke. I’m a teacher by day so I hit up bars about mixing for their happy hours instead of letting a jukebox run on auto pilot. It’s so frustrating that I want to quit. I won’t though I wish I could.

If you have the budget, you need to buy a Reloop Beatpad 2. It has every possible option you could ever need in a DJ controller. While your at it, order a coffin case for it because that controller will serve your needs for years and years until you wear it out.

One final suggestion, if you buy an audio 2 make sure to buy the Traktor wall wart power adapter because you need it to charge your device.

Very familiar with djay 2 on the iPhone and iPad and djay pro on the mac… You can easily switch between your local library and Spotify in the middle of a set. It’s just a matter of selecting library’s when you load a song to a deck and it’s seamless. I had to flip my iPad towards my new iPhone so never used djay pro on the iPad but used it on my MacBook for a year-long residency where I had to play Top 40 songs that I was never gonna buy (thereby Spotify saved my bacon when I inherited the gig after another dj quit). The streaming versus buying debate is as pointless as vinyl versus cdj so I’m not going to debate it. Most importantly, if you are using an iPhone you can’t buy djay Pro and are stuck with djay 2. That’s a problem as you cannot select the high bitrate song option under the Spotify settings within djay 2. It’s an arbitrary and annoying limitation as my iPhone 6s is more powerful than many of the iPads that support djay Pro but good luck getting anyone at algoriddim to do anything about it. Do not subject your audience to the massively compressed low bitrate Spotify songs that djay 2 on the iPhone forces you to use and if you’re on anything else from iPad to MacBook Pro, make sure to adjust that setting before you play out.

Finally, I highly suggest trying DJ Player and your local (on the device) library because DJ Player is awesome even if it doesn’t have Spotify integration. I use the old school 2 decks and a mixer layout and it’s just so sweet. Buy the pro version though because the light version is missing some options that you’ll need.

You should also pick up a Traktor audio 2 so you can mix properly instead of using a y-adapter like it’s 2007.
