Beat matching is super easy, all you need to do is practice. Just take a few house songs and mix them in for about a half hour a day for a few days then you’ll be fine. I highly recommend the digital dj tips courses for a whole host of reasons if you are new to mixing, but beat matching just takes practice and it’s really easy. The hard part is learning when to mix in (song structure) that’s where Phil’s course shines.

I just realized that I was kinda wrong in my previous post and my OCD is requiring me to clean it up. The short of it is that I feel that the delay I was experiencing with the MC2000 on a Windows laptop is due to Denon’s ASIO drivers. I believe that the WeGO3 didn’t have the same delay because the Pioneer has a better ASIO driver.

Here’s the longer explanation: I bought my MC2000 for smaller gigs then did small gigs for the last 6 months. After the first month on the MC2000 I grew too frustrated by the lag and bought the WeGO3 which had no lag. Originally, I attributed the difference to the fact that you can plug the WeGO into a wall outlet instead of relying on usb power. Recently I switched DJ rigs from a Windows laptop to a MacBook Pro. Mac’s don’t require drivers (ASIO or otherwise) to run DJ controllers and the WeGO3 continued to work like a champ on the MacBook as it did on the Windows machine.

This week I dug out my Denon MC3000 and plugged it into my Windows laptop (the one I always used with that controller before my run of small gigs on the WeGO3). I should mention that I’m still hiding the MBP purchase from my fiancé so I keep the Windows laptop updated and use it for practice sessions (with the MPB stowed in my DJ bag where she doesn’t bother to look;) So that out of the way, I was shocked to realize that there was a noticeable delay in response to button and jog inputs on the MC3000 on the Windows laptop. It wasn’t as bad as I remembered the MC2000 being but after 4 solid months of DJing solely on the WeGO3 (both on the Windows and OSX laptops) I had grown unaccustomed to the MC3000 lag. I was totally bummed by this because my timing was off BUT the next day it occurred to me that the delay may be due to a difference in ASIO drivers between Denon and Pioneer. That evening, I set up my MC3000 on my MacBook for the first time and, sure enough, zero delay or lag at all. The only thing I can surmise from this situation is that Pioneer releases better ASIO drivers for their controllers than Denon and that life really is better on a Mac after all.

    Peace

I picked up a Denon MC3000 and it’s been my main rig since it came out. I love it so completely, that I wish I could buy 4 more to keep me stocked with backups for a lifetime.

That said, I picked up an MC2000 for smaller gigs and hated it. I hated it because of some very specific things that I perceive to be a problem. I feel that, compared to the MC3000, it doesn’t have the same sound quality. I can hear the difference in the lows and the highs. Also, as it’s usb-powered only, it’s not as responsive as the MC3000. Mind you, I wanted to love the thing. I like Denon and my MC3000 experience was so positive that I bought the MC2000 along with a flight case in the same order (that’s how sure I was when buying it). After a few months, I realized that I was not going to get used to it and ended up flipping it on eBay.

I ended up copping a WeGO3 for my backup/small gig controller. I really feel that it has sound quality that is on par with the MC3000 and I am happy that it’s able to be plugged into a wall outlet. There were a few times that I tried to use it on USB power alone and it’s not as responsive. I’m not saying that these controllers were going to sleep or anything (I know about tweaking the usb so that doesn’t happen) I’m saying that I perceive a difference in the responsiveness of the buttons when running off of USB power alone.

If I were you, I’d get a Denon MC3000 or a WeGo3 and a decksaver. In fact, get the WeGO3 because you can use it with computers or iOS devices.

That’s a great machine. I made a similar switch recently from a windows laptop to a 2012 MBP. Everything’s really easy to switch from win to mac (at least it is for me as a VDJ8 user) just follow the instructions online and be patient.

My main bid of advice is that if you share a backup drive of your DJ tracks with all of your computers (I like to edit and curate tracks on my main Windows desktop for instance) exFAT is your only friend. Stick that tidbit in your back pocket for when you get to that point.

Bro, buy a decent computer and a decent controller and then turn off the sync function, lower the pitch range in the software to 4 or 8% and beatmatch manually. I’d recommend a Denon MC2000 or a Pioneer WeGO3 and any contemporary i5 laptop. Figure $800 for the whole shot.

Denon MC3000, Mc4000 or MC6000 are all you need, brah.

Bro, you totally want a WeGO3 for what you want to do. I have an MC3000 in a flight case but picked up a WeGO3 for small gigs and iPad djing and it I love it so much, I started taking it to gigs I used to do with my MC3000. The lights on the WeGO are annoying but everything else about the controller is awesome for the money. I especially like the sound quality and the fact that I can map it to Virtual DJ to use with my laptop.

I literally could play a mashup every other song. They used to be called blends when done live in the mix back in the day (as 12 inches usually had acapella and instrumental tracks on them for that purpose). For that reason, I still consider it a blend when done live and a mashup when done before hand. I can pull off blends from time to time but prefer to create my own mashups ahead of time or find some dope ones on soundcloud. Problem is that mashups are probably the most polarizing form of music that a dj can possible play out. I pride myself in being a tasteful selector and that extends to my mashup choices and some of my most trusted friends have consistently told me they HATE mashups of any kind. I say that to warn that there will be people in every audience that will react negatively to even the dopest of mashups so for that reason alone, you’ll want to keep them to a minimum. Then there are the times when people just don’t get it, that’s always fun. I was playing a happy hour chill set a few weeks ago and dropped Greg Wilson’s Edit The Edit. With the song coming to an end, a young woman came up to me and said “don’t you have the Rolling Stones song instead of this version?” I’m like “yeah, sure, I can play that for you” facepalm.

Me and iTunes got off on the wrong foot when they didn’t support flac. I’ve even converted all of my flac files to mp4 but I still resent iTunes for that.

If that’s truly the case, I’ll just drag selected tracks into a djay Pro deck from finder. Sad that it’s come to that but with iTunes, I wouldn’t expect anything more.

Thank you for your suggestions! Unfortunately, there’s no way I’ll ever use iTunes to manage my files. I’m about as morally opposed to the idea as one can possible be. Basically, I refuse to cede so much control of my DJ tracks to a specific program, especially one that’s as big a kluge as iTunes has always been (to me). I can tell that it runs way better in OSX than it runs on Windows machines but it’s still an extremely offensive program to me.

The cool thing is that I don’t need it to do much. I keep all of my DJ tracks in their own folder called “DJ Tracks” (lame, I know) that is divided into sub-folders like House, Breaks, Rap, etc. That’s where I tag and arrange them via MIK, sometimes-Bulk Rename Utility, and Media Monkey on a Windows machine. The only thing I need iTunes to do is (1) make a database of these tracks without moving or copying them and (2) keep the database updated with added and/or subtracted tracks when I make changes to the DJ music folder or sub folders.
I don’t need iTunes to arrange the tracks or make playlists. I only need for the tracks to exist in an iTunes database so that they are seen by djay Pro. If they aren’t in the iTunes database, there’s no way to make them appear in djay Pro. That’s much different From VDJ where you can use a traditional file system tree. It’s a limitation of the djay Pro program but I don’t mind because I only use it when I need to DJ from Spotify. However, it’s nice to search my DJ tracks within that program if I happen to have a song that Spotify is missing.

VDJ8 runs great on the mac btw and my mac is less powerful than my Windows DJ rig, as it’s the basic late-2012 MBP with default components. I’m beginning to believe there’s something to the folklore about macs running audio production programs better than Windows machines.

You want a Denon MC2000 along with the full version of whatever software you end up liking. Don’t sleep on Virtual DJ 8 too. With a full license you can remap any button or knob on the controller to any function. I always remap the sync button to a vinyl brake effect, for instance.
