Ugh, all this talk makes it seem so complicated. I really appreciated when I learned about live sound hands on lol

How I see it, Mackie has become a bit like Behringer, you pay for what you get. The HD series which is the higher end stuff is quite fine. But the Thump series is dreadful, and the SRM-450v2 are quite inferior compared to the first SRM-450. And so on..

Yea, it’s easier if someone could show you in person, but if a speaker wire has 4 cores, that means that it could carry two signals of different frequency ranges in the one SpeakOn connector. Now in the speaker cabinet, you would have a corresponding 4 core plug, now two of the poles in the plug, will meet with 2 poles in the connector and carry one frequency range to the speaker in the cabinet. Now, the other 2 poles from the plug in the speaker cabinet, will route through the inside so that the current and signal coming from the other 2 poles in the connector carrying the other frequency range connect to two poles of a second speakon plug which another speaker could connect to.

In my experience, changes in ownership are not always good. Prime example is when Greg Mackie left the company and their products have been slightly less reliable ever since

Midi controller all the way. I have a Numark Mixtrack Pro II and loving it. But um Terry, a DDJ-SR is considered entry level?

    1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?

Well the first staging of the competition imo should be monthly. Then maybe others could be added at different times in the year.

    2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?

I would participate (or try to participate) most of the time.

    3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?

I think that there should be a senior/junior separation.

    4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?

Well I think we should have an overall judging for the first competition. But if more specific competitions came along, then we could judge on specific criteria.

    Other criteria include:
    Creativity
    Genre variety
    Wow factor
    etc.

    5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
I agree that an Article on DDJT would be great, as it would be something that provides exposure to the winner, as well as allows them to post the achievement on their website/page.

There could be other prizes: T-Shirt, Honourable Mention, A small inexpensive piece of gear, or even *drumroll* to be rewarded with one of the courses for free

(these prizes ofcourse would have to fit the scope of the competition) And at the end of the day, just the thrill of fun-competition would be good as well 🙂

    6) I think that the mixes should be accompanied by a video/screen capture of the actual mix being done live, to discourage any foul play.

I think the Axiom is a bit pricey for one’s first stab into production. I suggest the Novation Launchkey Mini or a Reloop Keypad 🙂 Or the Akai MPK Mini, that’s good as well.

I love this idea. Also the entries should come with the live video from the mix so people dont cheat and post mixes they made in a production software. I think the flagship competition should be aimed at the beginner level DJ’s of the site and the grand prize could be receiving one of the courses for free 😉 Or an article on the site 😛 I like that idea too.

    Come on Phil!!

I had this same discussion with another DJ I was having a practice set with, beat mixing isn’t the only trick we have up our sleeves people. Be creative

Upon further inspection of the photo, I just realized that both launchpads are separate from each other. IN this way, both artists can do a song on the fly while collaborating. For example, the one on the left could be taking the melody of the song, hence why he has the keyboard, which the one on the right is controlling drum kits and basslines. The possibilities are endless and i wish I was there to witness this set live 🙂 it must have been truly something.

He was using two Launchpads and some kind of keyboard from my view of it. And because alot of DJ’s use alternate midi controllers with production software that have a performance mode like Ableton or FL studio. This way they can make a more customized set with their own unique playing style. Since both devices are midi compatible he could map the buttons/keys to do almost anything. Or if he was using Ableton live, he can play notes with the keyboard(synth, drums, piano, guitar etc.) while launching clips and samples using the launchpads. I respect them for doing this because it shows that they’re thinking out of the box and they’re is no hiding in this set-up because its literally like playing a live instrument. (Unless ofcourse they played a pre recorded set, in which case that’s bad)

I could’t see Vintage’s comment and not say this (because of my culture lol), the main advantage of passive systems is that you can build your own speaker cabinets which can produce better sound quality than ready-made products. BUt y’know, as a DJ you dont really need to get into the custom built soundsystem world, but I had to throw my two cents in about that :3.

Staying on point though, Active speakers and active sub is the way to go for mobile set-up and convenience as a DJ 😛
I also loved that Vintage used part of my quote “Spend money good one time, never spend money again”
