Social media channels offer you an almost unlimited resource of people to talk to and pages to promote yourself on.

Digital DJ Tips reader Justin asks: “The hardest part of DJing for me is the promotion of my skills and services. Of course, I can post on social media sites and put ads up but the problem is that I feel that I don’t have any engaging content to push out. What kind of stuff should I be posting?”

Digital DJ Tips says…

Good question. Keeping an updated and professional social media presence puts you miles ahead of other DJs who just sign up for anything new that they see generating buzz online. While you are right to be worried about the quality of your content, it really isn’t something DJs should worry too much about.

When you break it down, it is quite simple. If you have made a new mix, post it. If you have a gig coming up or have been booked, post it. Just smashed a gig? Post it. If you find an interesting article related to DJing then post it. Try and think about it from the other side: What would you like to read from a DJ you follow?

It’s not about posting to all of your accounts on a daily basis, but posting at least once a week to just a handful of platforms makes you look more credible and committed, plus it lets promoters and clients know what you’re up to – this helps keep you top of mind.

One thing to bear in mind though is that as trends change, it’s easy to keep signing up for new platforms  (at one point it was Facebook, then Twitter and Instagram, and now it’s Snapchat) while forgetting to remove your old and inactive ones. If potential clients see a profile page that hasn’t been updated since 2015, it makes you look like you are out of business or uncommitted.
