Check out this crazy idea from Ion Audio, hot from the floor of the CES Show (via the BBC). It’s an array of stick-on accessories to turn an iPad into a set of physical controls for DJing.
Being demonstrated by Ion audio’s Winston Eade, “Scratch2Go” includes knobs, a crossfader and jogwheels – the latter looking like a throwback to some of the worst jogwheels of early digital DJing, which nonetheless are bravely demoed scratching in the video.
The unit is demonstrated connected via Bluetooth to a powered speaker called the Party Rocker – which is actually a more promising product, offering party-protected audio output and a pretty bright light show, all from one box. Your after-pub living room raves would never be the same again…
What do you think of the stick-on iPad DJ controls? Could you see yourself finding a use for the Party Rocker? Let us know in the comments…

They’re joking, right?
[ link ]Clever solution actually. Execution could be a tad thinner.
[ link ]I guess i stick with my laptop for the moment
[ link ]Interesting idea, however;
1. What happens when it comes to selecting a new track? The library will be obscured by the stuck on controls, potentially blocking your view of the next track you want.
2. Only useful for apps with screen controls of that exact size, pop these on the djay app and they’ll probably obscure the pitch control slider.
3. Only useful for single screen apps, if you have to open a popup window for FX, sampler, loops or anything else they would also be potentially blocked by the controls.
…the Party Rocker looks like fun though, I wonder what the latency over bluetooth is like?
[ link ]yeah, they are exclusively for the Ion DJ app that comes with the ‘controllers’ – NOT a universal solution for all apps. I think they are on to something here, although aesthetically I agree it could’ve been executed with a little more finnesse.. I can see these being developed for games & other apps that require precision you just can’t get with a finger. Steve jobs may have said we have 10 styluses already – our fingers, but that doesn’t neccessarily mean they are good styluses (styli?)
With the right direction & the appropriate people behind it, these stick on attachments could be the next big wave to hit touchscreens..
[ link ]This also works with DJAY which is the number 1 DJ app for iOS.
[ link ]If it’s not Bluetooth 4.0 (i didn’t see any audio device with this), then the transmission latency is more than 100 ms.
@ION SIMON: LOL
[ link ]Perhaps I’m not being forward thinking enough, but I like the idea of hardware peripherals to supplement iOS software. Occupying screen real estate just doesn’t seem too keen when an off screen unit would still retain portability while enhancing tactility.
The Party Rocker concept likely something that will catch on a lot sooner though. I could see that being a great solution at small venues, as technology progresses and enhances reliability it could become the standard.
[ link ]I am as big a gadget fan as the next guy, but I think I’ll pass on this one.
Pretty neat gimmick for an 11-year old for christmas though. He’d be the talk of the school yard for sure
[ link ]I think this is the worst idea that’s happened to digital DJing. Why would you *intentionally* obscure the already small touch screen? I’d actually argue that you’d be a better DJ just using the touch screen instead of having these controls stuck to it. This is not the best ergonomic design I’ve seen and I’d think this would be a much better design if the controls were on the flat surface in front of the iPad instead of on it. I get that there are people out there with very little money who want to DJ and they have an iPad, but there are a LOT better controllers than this for the iPad.
[ link ]Why suction cup them to the iPad. Suction cup them to various parts of your body and now you are the controller, heck I might by a set just so I can scratch from my friends forehead
[ link ]So lemme get this straight.
We had actual physical controls (faders, knobs).
Then some bloke figured – heyyyy, lets put those into software, and we got DJing software.
Then another bloke thought “Heyyyy dont ya just miss the physical controls though?” so we got midi controllers to control the dj software that has the virtual controls which resemble the physical controls.
Then another bloke said “heyyyyy you know what? lets make the virtual controls “touchable”…so we got the touch screens to control the virtual controls which resemble the physical controls.
..and then came this guy and said: “heyyyy you know what? lets put some sticker controls to control the touchable virtual controls which resemble the actual physical controls we once had”…..
….brilliant! lol
[ link ]The stick on controllers for the Ipad looks cheap not a fan of it , on the other hand I do like the party rocker for small party’s .
[ link ]I’ll wait for the Traktor IKONTROL ioS4
