Following on from its popular DM-40 home monitor speakers, Pioneer DJ has today announced the DM-50D, a desktop monitor system aimed at both DJs and home producers.

With 5″ woofers and a new 2 x 25W Class D amplifier, the MDF-built speakers are front-ported, making them ideal for use in tight spaces. They follow the primary/secondary speaker format, where one speaker contains all the electronics, the other being passive, with a simple wire connection between the two speakers.

The smart, all-black design is deep and boxy but with contours on the front, including diffusers to help spread the treble further. Their unique selling point is a switch to flip from DJ mode to producer mode, the latter giving a flatter response. Apart from that though, there are no EQ controls at all on the speakers.

The volume control is on the front of the primary speaker, and there’s also an 1/8″ headphones socket on the front, although you’ll still need to reach around the back to get to the on/off switch (a small white LED shows you the speaker is switched on).

A nice touch is that around the back are RCA, TRS (new over the DM-40s) and minijack inputs, and there is a choice of black or white.

They retail at €239 / $199 / £199, and will be available from 6 December. More info on the Pioneer DJ website.
