Virtual DJ 8.1 just launched, packing Shazam integration, cloud-based playlists, and a “GeniusDJ” cloud recommendation feature.

The latest update to Virtual DJ, 8.1, comes with Shazam integration, connecting to your Shazam account and listing all of your Shazamed tunes within the browser section of Virtual DJ 8. You can then either play these songs from your library if you have them, or stream them through the software’s ContentUnlimited subscription service.

There are developments in the software’s tune recommendation features, too. GeniusDJ lets you drag and drop tracks onto it for suggestions on what to play next based on trends by other Virtual DJ users, and Cloud Lists lets you see other Virtual DJ user-generated playlists.

Virtual DJ has often been a step ahead when it comes to adding forward-looking features to its software that at first may appear weird or wacky, and this definitely stays true to form with that ethos. While purists may balk at such recommendations and the idea of swiping songs from other DJs’ sets through Shazaming, the bottom line is that these are tools that could potentially be useful in both gig and music library-building situations – as is often the case, it all depends on how you use them.

We will be investigating the features further and carrying a review of them as soon as we can.

• Virtual DJ 8.1 is available now. Visit the Virtual DJ website for more details.
