Yeah, I used/use a fair amount of pad controllers. Nothing triggers a cue point quite like it 😉

    Past:
Akai MPD24 – great stand-in for the midifighter, used the faders as super effects faders and volume. Knobs were effect parameters.

    Current:
LPD8 – instant effects rack setup & complete sample deck for deck D (never thought i’d find a use for those knobs!)
MidiFighter – 3rd Deck, cues, effects, transport, etc
    Kontrol X1 – stock mapping with some tweaks. controls decks A & B + effects 1 & 2

    Future:
    More X1’s – decks C & D
the PAD-One looks like a nice alternative to the LPD8, I do love me some flashy buttons and it looks like a more complete package aimed at DJ’s.
@Phil, Whats the street price on the pad one?

Understood, and its a great moral standing point, which I hold myself. But just to be clear, im not bitching about him because he was inexperienced. Exactly the opposite in fact, he is the resident and has been for a long time. Its just plain sloppy and lazy.

Nice man, good choice of tunes, great transitions. Its like dubstep and electro house were made for each other!

I do like Yup by FS, heavy and bouncy. rusko’s everyday is a wierd one, theres no denying it has some great production, i just wish he used a different vocal sample. Chipmunks really dont get me going. lol.

Too true, ive seen a few DJ’s round my area flangering at every possible moment, literally every transition for the hour I was in there was excentuated by way too much flanger. Its like a kid with a new toy!

True, but my point is cost. Not many people have the best part of £900 laying about for a full range home monitoring setup. Least of all young aspiring bedroom dj’s probably still in education.

The spec on that £300 sub doesnt look all that different to mine that cost half the price. Have you seen the 12sH2O too? £1200!? You could buy a gig rig for that!

My point being that its all brand your paying for. the KRKs are good speakers that look nice, but so are many hifi speakers that can be picked up on the cheap second hand.

My workflow currently is to use beatport and juno to browse new releases, add to cart, then hop on over to emusic to snag them on the cheap.

I got on the emusic bandwagon before they changed their pricing structure, so a 256k VBR MP3 tune costs be 21p. Instead of £1.15 at beatport/juno. I can deal with the insignificant quality loss for that price!

Anything that I cant pick up through emusic I pick up through one of the other online retailers. Usually when they have a promo code available somewhere 😉

Gotta be 2 1210’s, 2 CDJ 2000’s, 2 X1’s and an Ecler NUO 5 alongside maschine plugged into ableton and TPro2.

sickness but completely non-portable and unaffordable.

I found the KRK6’s lacked the low bottom end. Great punch through the mid range but my dnb sounded a little bit like dn_.

Personally I’d go for something with a decent sub for practicing djing. Look out for the frequency ranges on the specs. Ideally you want something that can go down to 30Hz or lower, 35 should suffuce though.

I currently use a Hi-Fi system; Mission speakers, mordaunt short sub & rotel amp. While its a bit tonally unbalanced, it still sounds awesome and the bass boost button fills the air around me with sub bass 😀

and all for less than a pair of RP6’s!

You can do a miriad of things to mess up your laptop within windows with the aim of making it more reliable.

My theory, test it as a live situation. Pack up all your stuff, re-setup, play for a few hours. Maybe leave the laptop on for a bit and go back to mixing after an hour, pull some of the controllers out of the usb ports, plug them back in, take out the power cable, get that back in too.

All of these things have the potential to balls up your laptop. But if your lappy can handle all of this, you should be fine live 🙂

Personally I dont beleive that macs are better. I went out and got a refurbed HP lappy, set me back £250 with a 500Gig HD. A bit of tinkering and its the perfect gig machine. Mind you, its completely dedicated to traktor and the only time it sees the internet is through NI’s service center. But then I can afford to do that, because both my windows laptops cost less than 1 mac. Go figure.

Ive owned the reloop digital jockey 2. I must say it was a great controller to get me started although the cue/cup/play buttons can be unreliable, it would mess you up in a live situation. The soundcard was good though and the faders and pots are excellent. I especially like the killswitch on the EQ’s.

I havent played with the control six, so no comment on that but I will say gemini are a budget brand. I have not heard great things about their turntables or speakers.

Do you run a DVS setup or purely controller? If youre on DVS and do not need an EQ, get a Kontrol X1.

Theres a place local to me that plays the same old rinsed top40. the guys got a mix CD with the cheesiest tunes on mashed into each other. He plays it every single time, it breaks my heart. The only reason I still go there is for the totty and cheap booze. But when that place gets a good DJ, from time to time, the place is electric!

Another recent group of DJ’s I went to see were doing a comeback party. Belfry vs pink coconut. Some bigger oldschool names there, but it was DIRE. The ‘DJ’ was playing old raggae, not the dancable stuff, things like ‘pass the dutty to the left hand side’ all night long through peak. He’d play the intro and first verse and do a massive spinback when it hit the chorus and people looked like they might try and enjoy themselves. Then onto the next intro.

The place looked like a funeral. Someone must have shot the DJ and replaced him because they stuck some jungle on about an hour before close and the whole place started bouncing.
To this day I cannot fathom what that DJ was thinking with the spinbacks. If youre an established DJ, when you lookup and see the crowd not enjoying themselves, seriously, get with the program.

Its about space to number of controls ratio more than anything. The X1 can combine all my needs from the 2 controllers into one with a smaller footprint to boot.
I do love the midi fighter though, its intuitive, robust and a great controller. I might just hang on to it for sentimental value.

I love seeing peoples setups, gives me ideas for my own.

    Heres the current battlestation:

Although ive got another X1 on the way to replace the midifighter and LPD8. I also REALLY wanna pimp my tech12’s. A nice white pearlescent paint job and a blue LED conversion would make them soooo sexy.

I kinda like dubstep, I also like that theres two completely opposite ends of the spectrum. The deep, dubby stuff tends to have more thoughtful production, but isnt danceable, whereas the mainstream stuff is barely danceable but at least has massive presence.

Dubstep nights are becoming more and more common around my hometown in the UK. I went along to the big local one, I was truly out of my depth. Loads of little kids brocking out, felt more like a noisy creche than a nightclub. Never again.

A friend of mine is a DJ in this very place (not for the dubstep night though), they got a new Xone 4D and some JBL monitors a while back. The very first time the dubstep crew used it they shot both speakers and broke 2 channels on the mixer.

Im my eyes dubstep is kids music, an alternative to rock, but a vent for teenage angst nonetheless. It has its place, and im glad that’s kept to its own nights so I dont have to deal with the crowd it attracts.
