Same. I’ve never managed to get a mix up on YouTube without it being flagged for copyright infringement and therefore being invisible in every country, ever.

Best just to use it for some short performance videos and for your own productions I guess. Tutorials is another option of course, if you were that way inclined; it can be a good way to get your name out there, as well as ‘giving something back’ to the community 🙂

This is becoming a very detailed thread 🙂

Chuck answered the jog wheels question nicely, thanks man.
I’d definitely agree that it is easier to nudge with jog wheels; it takes a while to get used to how slow/fast/short/long to ‘swipe’ on the touchstrip, but once mastered it’s probably as responsive. I often ride acapellas with dubious BPMs/slack beatgridding (yes, I know, poor preparation!) manually by swipe-nudging. But yep, scratching is totally out.

You DEFINITELY need to try the Twitch out before buying, some people REALLY miss the jogwheels, so do find a store somewhere in the Seattle area and go in and have a play. Can’t comment on US stores, but in the UK stores will happily let you play for a few hours to help with the decision making process 🙂

Also, spend a few hours on YouTube watching controller reviews and people’s demo performances, particularly ones where you can see both the controller and a screen capture. It’ll start to give you a good idea of the differences in the software/hardware.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the differences between Traktor and Serato, as GP said. They fundamentally do the same things, although Traktor is a lot more customizable if you’re into ‘tinkering’.

I own a Twitch, and (for what I do) it’s a great controller, and a real steal if you can get it for that kind of price, particularly as you’ve already spotted that it gets the free upgrade to Serato DJ (from Itch). I’d make totally sure that you’re not going to miss the jogwheels though (I don’t at all, I don’t scratch, so touchstrip nudging for manual beat matching is fine for me). I bought an F1 after owning the Twitch about a year, so I also play with Traktor (and Ableton) sometimes using that alongside the Twitch, but for ‘straight-up’ 2 channel DJing, I tend to go back to Serato.

I started on a cheap Hercules controller, though, (I think it cost about 60 USD) using Mixxx software, which is free. It taught me the basics of mixing, beat matching etc… which was a much cheaper route if I hadn’t been so serious about it. Depends on how much you want to invest straight off the bat really.

Get down to your local DJ store and spend a couple of hours there, or spend an afternoon at your S2-owning friend’s house, and take your time. And once you make your mind up, enjoy the journey!

    Very solid mix, favourited!
    Good luck with it!
I’m in North London – will have to add this event to my calendar… it sounds like it will be a good one!

Ahh yes, and that’s the beauty of it; if you want to draw something you just write:

    rect(0,0,100,100);

and lo! A square is born… which is more than I can do even with a pen and paper 🙂 Like you I am extremely ‘challenged’ in the art department!

Software for iPad, as the other guys said, DJay and Traktor are both good. I’ve been messing around with Pacemaker recently too (if you have a Spotify account it’s particularly good).
As for cables, get yourself a MONO-splitter cable (careful here, you don’t want something that just pumps a stereo out on each channel) such as this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Griffin-Master-Output-Splitter-iPhone/dp/B0056XAWOU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1399476442&sr=8-2&keywords=dj+splitter+cable).

They’re often advertised as ‘DJ splitter cables’ but as long as it’s splitting stereo into 2 x mono channels, that’s what matters. Then on the software, turn on split cueing. Bingo! You can now cue up tracks properly. You’ll just need a 1 x 3.5mm cable –> 2 x RCA to get into your mixer (or the back of your standalone controller) and that’s it!

You can get pretty much the same effect by gaffer taping some iPads to your existing controller and running Serato Remote. I’m working on it right now 😉

I find it very easy to nudge with the touch strips, their resolution is good and you can do bigger or smaller ‘swipes’ depending on how subtle/big you want the change to be – you’ll get used to it within a week or two no problem, it’s quite intuitive.

Daryl covered it off pretty nicely, I’d basically just echo what he said (including the output levels – don’t let that be a deal breaker!)

I moved from a budget Hercules controller (not the Instinct though) to the Twitch and it’s an absolutely massive leap in terms of quality, design, options and (most important of all) fun. I don’t miss jog wheels at all, the touch strips are accurate and it’s easy to manual beat match on them – I quite often use them to keep poorly beatgridded (I’m so lazy!) acapellas in time without a problem. And if you’re interested in controllerism, the Twitch is an obvious choice – the buttons are very responsive, well spaced and really fun to finger drum on.

If you haven’t had a play on one yet and you can get to a local store, go and have a play 🙂

It’s always tempting to wait, but the Twitch is really an excellent controller, so I doubt you’d struggle too much to sell it on. I suspect a LOT of people with other controllers are waiting for the Twitch 2 as well, so they can snaffle up an original Twitch as a secondary portable controller…

I’d buy the Twitch now, and if in 9 months a second revision comes out, sell it on and upgrade. Plus, you’ll have spent those months mastering it, improving your skills and having a massive amount of fun. Oh, and you’ll get Serato DJ with the Twitch for no extra cost – who knows whether the Twitch 2 would come with the full version, or just the Intro version instead… hard to predict…

In summary, if you think you’ll like the Twitch, I’m almost certain you will love it. And actually, even if you’re not that into it in theory, once you’ve had a go most people love it anyway.

    I know I love mine 🙂

    Oh.

That’s probably why people never listen to my mixes 😉

Great off topic thread. FYI ‘to smash’ (urgh, disgusting phrase) is common in some parts of northern England too.
Branden: acapellas4u is excellent. And I’d second atom12v, for acapellas 192kbps and up is just fine.

Very cool. I’m a big Electro Swing fan, this sounds like an interesting thing to get involved in.
Obviously there’s the (always copyright-problematic) route of digging out old samples. I’d say with some chopping and beatgridding you could quite quickly build a library of different swing beats you could lay over the top of live musicians. On top of that a library of retro vocal samples would be useful, plus things like piano stabs and short loops. Depends how crazy you want to go really. Plus, if you bought some cheap midi drum triggers you could even play along with some basic beats (or add some bells and whistles).
If I were you I’d go along to a rehearsal and see what they want, dig out a few simple loops you can drop in and see how it sounds… and let us know how you get on! I’d love to be involved in something like this one day so be interested to see how you go!

Haha – I think you’ve heard most of my Polish now! Jestem anglikiem! I worked in Poland for a few months a couple of years ago, so the little I did know I have lost. Although, I can always remember how to order a wsciekÅ‚y pies 🙂
Cracow is such a great town. Had many a great night in Kazimierz… and of course, ended up in Kitsch more times than I would have liked 😉
