Hardware and software, with a couple of twists: DJ Rig is IK Multimedia’s take on the iOS DJing experience…
The iPad DJ scene is jumping forward fast right now, the latest addition being the DJ Rig for iPad software from IK Multimedia. We’ve already reviewed DJ Rig for iPhone and iPod Touch, as part of our look at the company’s own hardware solution, the iRug Mix Mobile iOS DJ Mixer.
But now, the software is finally available for the iPad too, and IK Multimedia is selling it as offering “a comprehensive DJ setup that packs all the features the most demanding DJs need”.
With CDJ, vinyl and waveform modes, 18 BPM synced effects, an onboard sampler and an innovative X-Sync mode that detects the BPM from external sources and autosyncs the software to it, the app is yet another choice for those coming to iPad DJing, as the platform gains ground.
It is currently unclear whether the software makes use of the new multi-route audio…
It is currently unclear whether the software makes use of the new multi-route audio capabilities of iOS 6, but at this stage an educated guess would be that it doesn’t – watch this space for more info on that.
It’s US$19.99, and available from the App Store (US) and the App Store (UK). There’s also a free version available.

Cool
[ link ]Just downloaded the free version of this app. I’ve always been a non-believer of ipad djing but i had fun with this! 3d effects, effects bank and i feel like a controllerist. Will prolly download the full version. What other dj apps can you recommend? Some apps don’t have free trial which sucks..
[ link ]Wow…I should just buy an iPad and give up on laptops.
[ link ](For full disclosure-I used to work at IK, though it is 3 years ago at this point, and I have no current ties save for the occasional hello at a trade show).
DJ Rig is kind of an important app for iPad DJ’s, for a number of reasons. The big thing is that IK develops everything (effects, Stretch engine, sampler, physically modeled turntable) in house. The same effects engines that power DJ Rig also power AmpliTube and Groovemaker, which is rather big. Imagine, as the platform grows, more features being made available from the other apps, or effects, or whatever. As well, having seen what lengths they go to develop their gear (I remember having to lift a vintage 70′s Orange 4×12 and head through the office….ouch), I have to give respect where it is due.
Plus, the nice thing is, it isn’t just a cash grab. While the people at Algoriddim have a more recent history in the DJ world (and make an AWESOME set of products), Enrico (CEO and founder of IK) was a dance producer long before IK. Groovemaker was created because he wanted to have the kind of tool to produce that he would use. Starr (marketing person there) is active in DJing, producing and engineering, and there were/are multiple people there who are active DJs. Passion projects are always the best ones, and there are some super passionate people there.
Good job guys.
[ link ]just downloaded the full version – it’s pretty good and works well with my iRig Mix. I love the compactness and I can rock up to a casual party with my IPAD+iRig and pair of speakers and away a go……………… (I wouldn’t use it at a wedding as my main system as this setup still looks and feels like a DJ toy)
[ link ]Not really a fan of touch.. seems you lose all of the.. “feel” of whatever you are doing, be it typing, turning or whatever..
but for people who like touch, this might be quite nice.
[ link ]Guys…… After playing around with a number of products. Your free demo sucks!…. Make it easy for me to spend 20 bucks…. I really want too!!….. You demo treats me like a kid….. Show me what you stuff can do…. Without throwing 100 pop ups at me!…. If your apps works, I will quickly see it….. Spend more time making me feel comfortable with your approach and key differentiation. You guys have to learn to position your app in a 60 elevator pitch ( software style).
I want a reason….. Repeat…. Want a reason to buy IK….. But you guys need an internal meetinghouse address your approach, less pop ups and a clear pitch.
I expect better….. And I’m sure you will deliver.
Eager customer.
[ link ]agreed here there are a few popups in the demo and you are locked out from some of the cool features. I think it is worth the $20 if you do take the plunge. I have about 8500 songs on my IPAD and it has take 3 days non-stop to scan my library for BPM data which now how has made the app storage reach 445mb
