Love Serato, Hate iTunes? Meet Alchimie Zinc

Alchimie Zinc review

File management is never going to be exciting, but if you use a Serato DJ program but hate iTunes, Alchimie Zinc could save you a lot of time.

If you use Serato ITCH, Serato Scratch Live, or Serato DJ Intro, but you don’t use iTunes to organise your music, Alchimie Zinc For Serato program could save you a lot of time when you’re organising your music.

It solves a basic issue whereby Serato doesn’t recognise your hard drive’s folder structure. This means you have to set up all your crates and sub-crates again from within Serato to reflect how you keep your music on your hard drive. You also have to put any new tunes in two places every time you add to, rearrange or delete from your collection.

Review & Video: Vestax VCI-380 Serato ITCH DJ Controller

Vestax VCI-380

The Vestax VCI-380 is the most fun we've had on two decks for a long time. Read on to find out why...

The Vestax VCI-380, which was released today, could just offer the most fun it’s possible to have on two decks with Serato ITCH. It takes the best bits from the highly innovative Novation Twitch, and adding some of the dependability and usability of Vestax’s previous Serato effort, the VCI-300.

We’ve had one for a week and so had time to scratch under the surface of this new Serato ITCH device. It turns out that not only does it combine the best parts of both of those controllers I just mentioned, but throws in an effects twist all of its own, and rounds everything off with some standalone mixer goodness. High time we took a closer look, in this, our full Vestax VCI-380 review and video.

Your Questions: Should I Switch From ITCH to Serato Scratch Live?

Serato Scratch Live SL2

The Serato Scratch Live SL2 system. With this, you can DJ on any standard record decks/CDJs and mixer set-up.

Digital DJ Tips reader Mateo writes: “I bought your DJ tutorial video course and it is working great! I’m learning a lot coupled with having a DJ mentor on board, and I’m sure I’ll be out and playing soon.

“The question I have is a very novice one. I have a NS7 and it runs with Serato ITCH, but the club I want to DJ at runs with Serato Scratch Live. I don’t intend to bring my NS7 to the club as they are all set up pretty much but I’m wondering, should I get another controller? And which ones work with Serato Scratch Live? Is there a learning curve between Scratch and ITCH?

Video: Vestax VCI-380 Serato ITCH Controller Talkthrough

In this exclusive video recorded at Musikmesse 2012, Mike from Vestax talks us through some of the features of the company’s forthcoming VCI-380 DJ controller.

Designed for Serato ITCH but with an open architecture so it can be mapped to any Midi-learn software, it is probably best described as a hybrid of the company’s VCI-300 and the Novation Twitch. However, having seen it “in the flesh” we were particularly impressed with a couple of its features, more so than just from the press release.

Your Questions: I’m Torn Between Traktor and Ableton Live

Faderfox Micromodul FT3

The Faderfox Micromodul FT3: It works with both Traktor and Ableton Live - but it won't solve your software problems single-handedly.

Digital DJ Tips reader Chris W aka Spec4 writes: “I have a problem. I am torn between using Traktor and Ableton Live.

“I have Ms Pinky for Ableton Live but it’s overly complicated. I love the loops and loop controls of Traktor and the easy effects usage, but I value the warp in Ableton and the ability to launch clips. Do you think the FT3 by Faderfox would be a good controller option here option?”

Watch Out, Traktor: ITCH Adds Video & Controller Sampling

Serato Video

Serato Scratch Live video: The plugin, due March 2012, improves on this, with ITCH support being the big draw for controller users.

Serato’s flagship ITCH controller software now includes hardware control of sample decks with the option of full video support via a plugin, according to two separate announcements by the company this week.

The software’s sample decks are in addition to up to four decks of normal playback (unlike Traktor’s two decks plus samples) – and by adopting full video support (like Virtual DJ), it has taken a big distinguishing feature from that software and made it its own too.

Hands On With The Novation Twitch

Novation Twitch

It's certainly a controller with a difference, looking like a cross between two X1s and an Akai Ableton controller.

The Novation Twitch DJ controller caused a real stir on its first public outing at the Musikmesse Show as reported by Digital DJ Tips earlier this year, being the first major controller to offer DJs an alternative to jogwheels in an all-in-one controller.

On Friday I went to Sonar Barcelona 2011 with the main aim of getting my hands on the new Novation Twitch to see if it’s as good as Novation’s Twitch YouTube video suggests. Here’s my report:

Finally! Serato ITCH 2.0 Arrives Next Month

Serato ITCH 1.7

Serato ITCH has always been elegant and simple to use (this is 1.7), but with Traktor finally catching up with coloured waveforms in its April version 2, Serato may have felt the need to ensure ITCH 2.0 with its new features was also available at the same time.

Serato ITCH 2.0 will be show to the public at the beginning of April. The release (of what will presumably be the beta) was confirmed by Serato on the company’s Facebook page today. Serato’s full statement reads:

“ITCH 2.0 is progressing nicely and is looking really exciting. There are some great new features in it that will benefit users of all controllers, as well as a new look that we hope people will love. In regards to when? Software release dates are always tricky, but we hope to have something to show you all early next month.”

“Digital DJing Saved Us From The DJ Booth!” – AndrewAndrew Interview

AndrewAndrew: Taking DJing back to the lab in search of inspiration. Pic: Wired

In this exclusive full-length interview, New York DJ duo AndrewAndrew tell Phil Morse about DJing with satellite radios, why they asked Mark Ronson to use a click track, and how they got thrown out of a club for only playing records with certain words in their titles…

I had just finished moderating a particularly closed-minded pile of replies to our recent Why Theo Parrish is Wrong About Laptop DJs post, and was browsing for something to cheer me up when I came across a New York Times article about AndrewAndrew: “The IPad DJs”….

Do Digital DJs Even Need Headphones Any More?

(Or, the dark art of waveriding…)

Headphones

Is it time to hang up the headphones for good?

Some DJs have been spotted in the wild playing sets without headphones on, causing a right uproar among the purists. There’s whispering talk that they’ve been locked in their bedrooms, practising the dark art of “waveriding”.

It’s time to come clean. Is that you? Are you a “waverider”? Have you read this far and suddenly decided you want to be one? Do you not have the faintest idea what I’m talking about?

Choosing a Digital DJing Controller

DJ Trinity from Philadelphia

DJ Trinity from Philadelphia tries out an iPod DJ controller

Here at Digital DJ Tips, our ethos is simple: DJing should be done digitally, and you should be able to fit all your DJ gear in a bag. That means a laptop, a controller, and anything else that will fit in the pockets and compartments of your DJ trolley, backpack or shoulder bag, such as headphones, soundcard etc.

Your controller is probably the most important choice you’ll make when it comes to DJ equipment, and it’s an intensely personal one. You can get by with any old laptop as long as it has the power to do what you need it to, but the controller is literally going to be in (or at least under) your hands all the time when you’re DJing.
