Sorry to hear that, I was just thinking about that today could I be a DJ if I went blind… actually there is a software algoriddim’s DJAY software has a voiceover option for the blind to use, the only problem is the voice over instructions come out over the master audio and people were complaining if it only came out through cue then it could actually be used professionally, this was a year ago or more so maybe they have fixed it, djay 2 is 5 to 10 dollars Djay pro is 10 to 50 dollars all depends for which machine you buy and sometimes on sale ,I got djay 2 for ipad and iphone for free on one of their sales / promotions

The other thing I would think for blind dj’s is to use cd players with mp3 cds and more or less remember your playlists or a stand alone media player or controller that can play usb drives but doesnt have a fancy screen or too many menu options so you can operate it by controls and buttons which would be easy once you memorize the placement, you can use one of those label machines that have embossed letters or braile on the usb drives or cd cases to identify which is which , denon s1200 Cdj 400 cdj 850 can play cds and usb drives and controls are mostly mechanical and dont really need to look at the screen to operate

I have seen a video of a guy with no arms and he djs with cds and I think it was cdj 200 or 100, and there was a movie about a dj that was deaf and would beatmatch by feeling the speakers with his feet, dj ing blind is possible because you mostly have to rely on your ears, but going the computer, software, and visual screen route might be too much trouble or just plain impossible, but on some slightly older equipment that you dont need to rely on the screens you can definitely do it !

Thanks everybody for the replies so far! anyone else reads this after feel free to continue sharing your experience , im definitely impressed by the denon unit as a mixer more than pioneers, but as some of you mentioned the software for now is not good and too many people mention the same issues to be ignored but hopefully those software problems will be resolved soon as many people are anticipating, the pioneer still seems to be the more dependable unit as a standalone controller but im not rushing so I will wait and see but those two are my top choices right now as ideal standalone controllers my second choice on a lower price level would be the i think its called numark mixdeck express the one that has usb and two cd players looks kind of cool and good priced but Im sure isnt on the level of the pioneer or denon im asking about

Since you are set on cd’s do look in to the cdj 850 used you can find them for about 400 each I often see them sold in pairs with road cases for 800 usd which is pretty good if your budget is 2500 they play cds and usb and the big difference between them and the 900s is the 900 has a wav form and the 850s just has the bar graph ,if you are going to connect them to a laptop you wont miss the built in wav forms because you will see those on the computer …you made clear you only want advice about 900 or 2000 so I didnt talk controllers but do consider controllers and also other brands such as denon numark etc, you don’t have to center yourself around the cdj 2000 , $2500 is a huge budget if you use it on promotion and advertising your services or learning skills like the classes on this site and other random gear like monitors, cases, tables , lights, etc, if you spend the budget on just your basic equipment you might not get much back from your investment , remember you ARE a dj with or without equipment 😉

From what I can see the difference is the 2000 can play usb ,sd card, dvd, and cd The 900 only plays usb and cd …but there are three models of the 2000, The 2000, 2000 nexus , and 2000 nexus 2 so pay attention to which model you get … if you just want this to practice at home and expect to use 2000s at a club then buying your own 2000 would be overkill in my opinion , the price is not cheap, you would be better getting the 900 and using the extra money to by a good carrying case, speakers, and lights and can do your own gigs outside of clubs or use the extra money to produce a track or advertise yourself that would advance your career much better than investing in expensive equipment that you will have at the club anyways, most all pioneer products and controllers are similar enough in functionality that if you can use one you will not feel out of place on the other

Since you will probably keep your equipment a long time you want to be “future proof” so its better to go with controllers than cds but if you have a big music collection in cd you dont want to abandon there are some all in one choices such as the pioneer xdj r1 and numark mixdeck that has cd players and usb , the most noticable difference between cdjs and controllers I think is when you are searching for cue points on a cdj you will hear the cue stutter which is the point repeating rapidly that da da da da da noise , and on controllers it imitates vinyl so you will hear it scratching, I have never seen any controller with cue stutter, it feels strange at first but you get used to it quickly

I have seen ads for dj gigs that said no one over 25 no one with more than two years experience and no one with a masters degree … what that really means is no one smart enough to ask for payment and not get cheated , if anything you are too old to be a sucker not too old to be a dj you can definitely start being a dj at 30 or more and expect to make it a paid hobby or even paid profession

Get whichever controller you like better but yes the pioneer rb is fine for beginner and professional gigs you can dj shows with an entry level controller , if im not mistaken the ddj-rb brings the full version software included which is a nice plus for an entry level price , mostly you could worry more about getting good headphones more than getting a high end controller

the producer class would teach you software that would let you create your own original music beats while a dj course would probably teach you the equipment used by dj s in nightclubs that play music and also most likely some music theory and how to use the equipmemt to mix different songs for smooth transitions, sometimes there is an overlap as now many djs are producers as well, if you could only pick one class id suggest the production course as there are many many more functions and processes involved in creating music that you would benefit alot from learning and push your progress much faster coming from a class than just trying to figure it out by yourself , a dj ing course would be good if you have zero access to equipment as many classes offer you hands on time to play with equipmemt, if you do have your own equipmemt but still want to take a course the online courses like on this website should be greAt

pop music songs arent that long to begin with ,mixing in during breaks might make the songs too short, so be prepared to play a lot of songs in a short time if thats your intention , it is fun to mix shorter pop songs and radio version because the time is short and makes it a bit more challenging as a dj and also cool for the crowd as they are probably not used to seeing a dj do his thing on those kinds of songs

For weddings dress as if you were a guest meaning formal (suit and tie) or at least semi formal (dress pants and a long sleeve button shirt) the basic rule for weddings is whatever you wear dont be flashier than the groom so no 5000 armani suit if the groom just wore a 100 dollar rental, for clubs and such yeah its cool to dress flashy and stylish since you are the center of attention but toally up to you and your own personal brand and style if you think t shirt and jeans is enough or if you want to dress to impress, but its not necessary to turn it into a stage costume unless thats your intention , for me personally clothes that gives off a “dj vibe” would be like hip hop style or slightly punk rock style or skater style , and depending on the specific club and its dress code or how the crowd dresses you can adjust to match them more , when you pick your outfit try matching head to toe and be slightly more attention grabbing than in your everyday life Dont worry you will look great 😉

As you said its just to plan out your sets then maybe size doesnt matter you can even do that on your phone, but to play your actual set you would want a standard sized or bigger screen, I would only recommend a 7inch screen if you mostly use a controller and just have the screen for track selection

Also try pressing the shift key and other buttons to see if those missing controls you are looking for are “hiding” behind other buttons

The wego does work natively with virtual dj and djay software if you decide later to abandon traktor
