Thanks DJ Peter. I think I will end up on something like an MCX8000 eventually even though I keep trying to talk myself out of it. Thanks for the tips on settong up the PC too – it doesn’t sound like a lot of fun but I guess it’s gotta be done.

This is what I meant by wires not being velcroed to the stand.

Thanks Vintage, its probably not a deal breaker. Think it will be a MC6000 for me for now.

With regard to the all in one all singing all dancing unit my concern is not so much the issue on the night / back up but thinking about how I would feel when my top of the line controller is out of action on a bench somewhere because a screen has died etc.

As for other options – just ideas but controller – numark dashboard – and a DJ SUB player (your choice) would be similar.

It’s just my feeling but if the controller completely konks out at least you still have the other 2 units.

    Hi Vintage

I’ve had hazers set off fire alarms. It’s uncommon but you still feel like a lemon when you empty a venue. One time it was on super low but what I didn’t notice was the haze being drawn to a open door that had a sensor above it.

Is the cabling in photos not up to snuff? Can’t do much about the small trail on the ground -other than a bigger screen and if it ain’t in foot fall range I’m too lazy to take it!

Perhaps the one thing we all miss when setting up our lights is how it looks from the crowds perspective. We can stand there marveling at the projections from our new moving head or scan but no haze and all the crowd sees is a colored wobbling mirror.

If you can’t use haze (fire alarms are getting more sensitive) then scrims and glow screens are an option; cheap easy, diffused light so you are not blinding Great Aunty Mabel (if you do weddings etc.) and venues seem to like the look of them.

Also the most important investments for a light show are cable ties and velcro straps. (we all know this already but just in case) IMHO there is nothing worse than seeing cables stretched through the air from a power box on the ground to a light on a t-bar stand or truss. Cable can be permanently attached to the truss or bars to a socket so that you can then run power etc. up the back of the tripod and secure those cables with velcro strips.

Hope that helps but if you know all of that already then tell me to be quite – I won’t be offended.

One thing I think I will miss these days is the modular 19″ rack mount format for DJ gear, not so much for size but for when things go wrong. For example if a spilled drink takes out my head control unit then the mixer may survive. The advantage of putting everything in one unit is great for making controllers that fit in your back pack but that will be one hack of a back pack for that beast.

So… one thing that is steering me away from the MCX8000 (just a personal choice) is the amount of things that can go wrong with the one unit, screens , USB, mixer etc. There are solutions that would get similar results without all of your eggs in one basket and become part of a reasonable back up / redundancy plan.

Funny thing is I don’t know, all I know is that every video review including the one from (DDJT’s Phil Morse) finds them not to be ideal. If the meters give clear accurate /selectable individual PFLs and master out, well that’s good enough for me.

Thanks for you advice. Don’t laugh but I’m on an old PCDJ Dex, all it needed was an internet connection and it was up and running again as soon as it verified the key – which was pretty much instantly. My back up and redundancy needs some updating which is why I thought it would be good to find a software that may not need on line reactivation after it has spat the dummy but if other software could be more problematic to get up and running again it’s not going to make any difference. I’ll think I’ll use some of the ideas in your article – thanks.

I like that idea, as much as controllers in a bag would be easy to carry. I’m leaning towards racking up something like SDJ1 with a controller and a Formula Sound Shadow – had one of those years ago best back up mixer on the market.

Thanks – think I’ll get shopping for a 1u mixer to rack up.
