When you say manually changing it do you mean double clicking on the bpm and changing it to 170 in your case, that’s what I do just double it and it works, am I doing it wrong or something??

Hey guys met him earlier tonight he said play whatever you like he said don’t worry about keys he can jam to anything, cool guy so I’m going to play breakbeat and house and then hopefully squeeze in some drum and bass, quite a trendy cafe and finally get to play music I like myself rather than what I’ve played at my other two gigs so looking forward to it and hope it becomes a regular gig, though he’s only visiting the city for a few weeks but I think they need a dj so hopefully it leads to something.

Another vote for traktor here. Ive used ableton for production and thought oh I could dj with it too but got a shot of traktor and switched to that pretty quickly. In ableton you need to warp all your tracks, some are ok but sometimes it can be very time consuming unlike traktor, when I get a track thats not working in traktor I fix it in ableton then put it back in traktor, always works whereas sometimes with ableton id be tinkering for ages, done me ed in

Thats cool man good for you. Ive been in 4 local clubs here in ho chi minh and there the same, tables and chairs everywhere, everyone sits around drinking coffee though Ive not been to any of the bigger clubs in the city yet. See dancing used to be seen as a sort of western evil here in Vietnam, they would build these nice big clubs and fill the dancefloor with tables and chairs though ive heard its starting to change. Got my second gig tonight, well this guy from new york who looks like dj sneak is coming to watch me and they say play what you want, im not going to that didnt work before so im going to play what they want which is electro im sure, similiar to this guys set http://www.digitaldjtips.com/forum/threads/electro-house-mini-mix-perry.6126/

Yes just back from my first ever gig! It went eh ok started off by plugging my fecking out into my in on the soundcard, pressed the cue button and the music dissapeared LOL Then I realised, Id never do that at home, was panicking at the start as I had set the soundcard to the wrong thing and nothing was working but realised the obvious after a couple of restarts, wasnt especially nervous was just doing stupid things then the guy goes play something happier, I was playing quite up for it house music so I played this, really happy I think:

Though they werent impressed I thought so changed it to the style I think they like, well what little I have of that style, they call it vietnamese house, its like cheesy dance meets hardstyle, ended up playing for an hour and it went pretty well. Luckily I had a load of shit tunes imo backed up.

All the djs sounded the exact same, some of them played the same songs they were ok just not my sort of music and imo its sometimes seemed like the human record playing show, some ok mixing and stuff just some nights id go to in scotland you could tell what dj was playing, each one would have his set and style or it would progress through the night till its totally banging, or the headline dj is playing. It would be like one piece of music not a bunch of songs stuck together. I didnt see any progression just a bunch of same same djs but now I know what to do and what sort of music to search out. with my tools, the faderfox dj3 and the dnsc2000 with traktor I feel I can do a lot more than 2 cdj’s and a two channel mixer.

So Im not sure if they will call me back, see I didnt know, lesson learned, do your homework as I didnt. Id gave them 7 cd’s of lots of different styles kept asking what style you want me to play they kept saying house, perfect but well my idea of house and their idea of house is a different thing, im right their wrong LOL I think because im western it may go in my favour but now I know and its a big place, not the only club and done a good bit of networking, all the vietnamese wnat to be friends with the westener so heres hoping it takes off, going to keep trying, clubs everywhere you know.

Going to get my card sorted this week hopefully ill post a pic of it or something, thanks again!

Hey man Im from the Uk currently residing in Vietnam, my mate lived in tianjin teaching english the last 8-9 months. I think you would fit in down here in ho chi minh city, met a dj yesterday who makes hardstyle esque stuff on fruity loops, djs 7 days a week and produces during the day im like wow hes living the dream, so im going to try harder to get some gigs! Im just not that into hardstyle. Had so much problems with this new club thats opening they said will give me a job contract everything and I just keep getting told oh a few days, im ready to forget it and go look elsewhere.

I also discovered this site after looking for a portable controller for travelling asia and seen his review of the faderfox dj3 and here I am going to hopefully get gigs with it after seeing his review, great site I agree ive learned so much in the short time ive been here. Ill let you know of my experiences here as china and vietnam arent that different really! Welcome!

Cheers guys appreciated, and your probably right about lying about experience. I have played at partys and stuff so maybe ill stretch the truth a ltitle to make it sound bigger than it was. I have played in front of 150 people playing guitar over a track on cubase for charity and that was terrifying so good chance I could freeze, but well it was 10 years ago and I wasnt that confident, now im pretty confident because Ive been mixing for years and well I dont have to match beats, see I neevr owned technics and could match beats perfectly on my direct drive numarks and my mates vestax but I always struggled with technics for some reason, now I just hit sync and can mix 3 tracks etc. on traktor. Good advice appreciated!

LOL ok thanks. I am from the UK but im living here in Vietnam teaching English and I hoped to DJ at night. My friend said she liked my music but shes a woman with no interest in dance music, she works for the PR department with some bank here. And yes im open to the idea about lying about my experience, just like a cv isnt it?? Everyone lies on their CV’s lol I was supposed to play at a club in scotland where im from but I ended up emigratting, see I am better than a lot of djs who were getting gigs there so I know I am capable, ive only seen a few djs here at this coffee bar, place was rammed but oh they were terrible, just cutting it, flanger every mix hardly any beat matching, pretty bad mc and music imo but they were hot woman lol

She actually told me this morning she thinks I can use my normal name, its David O’Brien doesnt sound very cool I was reading the ddjtips article about dj names, I suggested to her David Mazzarati or something cool but she didnt get back to me see shes helping me make the card, I asked her for dj names and she couldnt think, anything I suggested wasnt good enough, she said the vietnamese wouldnt understand. I suggested Broomptish, kid sonic, Infinite I, all forum screen names ive used. I suggested DJ Skud she didnt get it dont want to start another thread about my dj name so if anyone has any ideas thatd be great again cheers

Hey folks so thought id give you guys a wee update here rather than starting another thread on my progress or lack thereof!

So was all prepared with a 20 minute hiphop and house set drove for miles to get to the place and we got there and it was closed, then this gang of about 20 Vietnamese shouted us over to this juice bar across the street. Ive not yet seen vietnams equivelent of a gang but this seemed like one, the girls had hotpants and addidas tracksuit tops the guys looked pretty rough, one guy had his shirt unbottoned half way down with a big chunky silver cross chain and all these rings, he was doing most of the shouting.

So we sit down and I start thinking oh no there going to steal my equipment this is bad the angry guy continues ranting at everyone and everyone looks kinda scared of him. he then says to the girl im with I must study vietnamese, as an example of the difference he says vietnamese say dah when they feel pain whereas english speakers say ouch, everyone laughs! Im thinking how to escape because im convinced that they are discussing how to dispose of my body and live like kings with my controllers LOL get talking well through my interpreter to a dj next to me and he seems really nice and I finally chill a bit, then she interprets what the main dude is saying, hes the clubowner and everyones there to get a job hence the respect, hes saying there will be no fighting and no swearing in his club, which put me at ease but them im scottish so im basically fucked LOL

They told me there will be me this dj and someone else so looks like I will get some gigs without the need for competing. I gave him all my most recent sets on disc and he shook my hand and said we will have a staff party to do sound checks etc. This was supposed to be tonight I knocked back some work to do this and it got cancelled today but to be expected here and it should open the next couple of weeks, I hope, in the meantime im going to hit the local bars/clubs and coffee shops in my area and see if I can get anything. Cheers

For chilled out or rock or certain electronica maybe sometimes but for most it’s a fallacy and a bunch of bullshit. Both combined haha. Think about it did any djs before 2000 odds use such pre programmed ideals? Maybe naturally but then was it something you planned out??? Oh it must be in key???? No never its natural that goes with that and that’s it, or maybe it doesn’t you know what I mean though, key pffffff lol

😀 No surrender though! You can’t turn your back on music. I still love old hardcore jungle, all about the love 🙂 if people would just chill the feck out and relax and appreciate the glory without worrying then everything would be great! Hahaha

Jungle and ragga jungle drum and bass and some breakcore is great fun but as I get older I’m mixing more house and tech stuff still always go back for a blast of rough stuff now and then but most people aren’t interested lol
