deathyParticipant
Todd – Good tip, thanks.
deathyParticipantIf you use Traktor, then the Traktor hardware might be a better go-to for you just because it will be future proofed against whatever NI decides in regard to support for non-NI hardware… everybody is expecting them to eventually just stop supporting non-NI hardware completely at some point. You’ll have slightly less latency with it, too, but that’s not going to be a huge deal without jogs.
deathyParticipantThanks! I’ll be posting the link in here when it gets released… you can hear the promo mix at https://soundcloud.com/deathy-1/ghettowood-sampler-mix-looking-for-label
deathyParticipantAh, yeah, fair enough.
deathyParticipantHonestly, what this says to me is “time to ditch Apple” if this is a serious concern. Android is not as stable, that’s certainly true, but for an emergency backup, it will still have more normal jacks than an Apple device will.
But, that’s just my opinion, and I abandoned Apple 4 years ago, so take my opinion with a hefty grain of salt.
deathyParticipantIf you’re using an iDevice to DJ, shouldn’t your controller still have jacks on it?
I guess you could get one of the low latency bluetooth headphones… not a great solution, but DJing on iDevices isn’t the best solution for the task at hand anyway.
deathyParticipantYeah, but if the person started out sold on the Mixtrack 3, then they’re already making a pretty solid decision.
deathyParticipantTitan – It’s pretty easy in Windows to disable closing your laptop being a sleep or shutdown trigger.

For Mac, not a built in setting… but there’s an App for that (and free, to boot). heh.

It’s also easy enough on Linux, but I really doubt we have any Linux DJs here (not that it’s impossible, just unlikely).
deathyParticipantNo, not seriously… I had a band back then, we put a lot of effort into it, but the keyboard player and singer were together… and when they weren’t, it fell apart.
I’m not opposed to making money on my music, but generally speaking, I prefer to give it away – if it’s really good, I might accept donations, but I have a pretty strong hate on for the recording industry and what they’ve helped do to intellectual property laws. I’m cool with indie labels, but haven’t put anything out on one… at least yet. I’ve been making music for a long time, but not all of it has been good enough for prime time.
I am actually going to be releasing a new album next week, but it’s outside my normal style these days. Already working on the next album after that, really happy with how it’s coming along.
deathyParticipantSorry, that’s incorrect. To have a problem with one brand of CPU over another requires bad coding, not focused coding. It means that your architecture is poorly implemented, you are using shortcuts in your code that you absolutely should never ever ever do… to an experienced coder, it is extremely easy to tell that their coders are not very good, and that their technical debt is probably getting insurmountable.
deathyParticipantI follow Phil’s advice, my playlist is extremely curated – my active setlist is around 500 tracks. As a result of this, though, my tags are pristine, and I know all of my tracks very intimately – well enough that I can do a live remix to restructure the song, such as moving the vocals out of the way if they’re going to clash, bringing them back in later, or even completely changing the song’s shape.
This is a major part of why I wrote my own DJ software is to support this, as I really enjoy having this level of control and understanding of my tracks.
deathyParticipantI don’t tend to drink, whether DJing or not, so it hasn’t been an issue for me, but when I’ve been on stage with other DJs, I’ve often seen them getting completely sloshed. It impacted their performance. If the audience weren’t as drunk as they were, I don’t think they’d’ve enjoyed it as much.
deathyParticipantFair, yeah, what Chuck said… I was only addressing the actual question, but his advice is better.
deathyParticipantHi, Shikhar, welcome!
deathyParticipantHi, Paul, welcome!
With regard to the laptop screen being a problem… in the very near future, we’ll be able to buy a HoloLens. Then, your screen will be overlayed over the world.
This will ROCK. I can’t wait. My own DJ software is already ready for it.
