Seconded Soundcloud, it’s a great source for cratedigging a lot of music – I see tons of Melbourne Bounce float through there.

There are so many bootleg remixes available for download on Soundcloud that I play 95% free music when I play out.

If they sound great when plugged into your speakers, it sounds like they are outputting line level rather than phono level. Ah, yup, here from the FAQ:

“The RCA Outputs on the back of the TT250USB are Line Outputs and should only be plugged into Line Level Inputs. On your stereo, these inputs may be labeled as AUX, CD, or TAPE inputs. Do not plug the RCA Outputs into Phono Inputs. The TT250USB has a built-in preamp that will be too loud for Phono Inputs and will sound distorted or may cause damage.”

On your S4 where you’re plugging in your turntable, flip the switch that says “Line/Phono” to Line and it should fix your problem for you.

The problem is, what you are asking is “would someone else just guess what will work for me?” There is no way at all for us to know what kind of workflow is going to work best for you. Your best bet right now is to keep your purchases on the cheap side so that if you find you don’t work well with it, it’s not the end of the world for you to shift gears. If it helps you, roll a 4-sided die and use this table:

    1. Get something that works with Traktor, like an S2.
    2. Get something that works with Serato, like a Mixtrack Pro 2.
    3. Get something that works with Virtual DJ (almost anything will work here – the DJ Control Instinct is nice and cheap (approximately $90) and lets you upgrade to full VDJ for $50).
    4. Wildcard! Flip a coin and try either Mixvibes Cross or Rekordbox.

This is an unfortunate part of the early process is that you are going to have to make some guesses as to what will work for you. Rather than actually roll on that table above, what you should ACTUALLY do is research – go to YouTube and watch some tutorial videos on using the various softwares, read reviews, etc., etc., etc. It won’t give you a GOOD feel for any of them, but at least maybe then you’ll be able to make an educated guess.

It sounds to me from the description of the problem that the BPM is showing correctly in the browser, and that it’s showing a different value once it’s loaded into the decks.

Does the sound clear up eventually? If it stays bad after that, then it sounds more like a bug than some sort of computer performance issue… but if it goes wonky for a half second then clears up, then it is possible you are having a performance issue.

The Mixxx forums might be better equipped to help you diagnose the problem, especially if it’s a bug.

Can’t address the hardware points, but if memory serves, the difference between the free version of VDJ and the paid version is that the free version doesn’t let you use a controller at ALL.

However, Mixxx does have community supported mappings for the various Mixtrack Pros (but not the quad). “Community supported” is a very different thing when you’re talking about Open Source Software, since really, the entire program is community supported, but I can’t comment too directly on the quality of the setup – I follow Mixxx because a free open source DJ package is good to know about, but I don’t use it any more.
