learn the basics just to learn them, practicing beatmatching by ear is not difficult and takes really no more than a few days to get down pat. but as always, rely on the tech, but dont count on it. i work in IT, and if theres anything you can count on a pc/server to do, its crash, fail, start on fire, and in general piss you off when you least need it to.

plan for a back up, and if your back up is without waveforms, bpm counters, phase meters, etc, youll thank whatever god you pray to that you learned and mastered the very basics from the get go.

greatest quote for DJing imo is “Failure to prepare is preparation for failure.”

the whole new tech/sync button vs “old school” argument imo is just so fucking stupid. i dont think i have ever seen a coal miner with a pick axe standing around bitching about all these “new school” miners using bobcats to get the job done.

as a professional online troll and offline instigator of so very many heated arguments (and a few fights) of 20 years, respond with “I invite you to my next gig and thanks for the support!!”

it will piss them off more than any counter-insult or even attempt to stand your ground ever will. add a smiley to it if youre feeling extra cheeky. feed off the hate, i dont even need to eat breakfast anymore.

hookah is basically dried fruits and tobacco all placed in the bowl of a huge “water tube” with like 6 ports for inhaling and is more enjoyable than a normal cigarette. a hookah lounge has a bunch available for customers. anything “illegal” going on there is the venues problem, and i guess the moderators problem if someone brings it up here.

yeah pretty much what ive been doing. the scene here in san antonio isnt exactly popular for trance though, which is what i started with because ive been listening to it for so long. fortunately i like electro and it has a decent foothold here. just wish i had the capital to blow 200 a month on it all willy nilly.

    damn you car payment….

25% off beatport just popped into the ole email tho….

maybe i should just be less of the guy who says “yeah i DJ, do you like trance???” and be more the guy who says “yeah i DJ, and you will learn to love trance.”

Unless you have set yourself a date when you will stop DJing, just build your collection organically as you go. My method is to take some time over my purchases and make sure that each tune hits 100% every time I hear it. If it still sounds good to me after a few weeks (and crucially, when I’m in different moods) then I buy it. This way your collection becomes personal.

im just antsy to expand my library, and honestly, the genres i have available.

Been practising hard for the last few days and I can get a dozen songs or so going and I’m going to keep practising so I can do more. I did tell them I could only do about 20-30 mins of mixing (hopefully near the end of night when some people have gone) so any advice? It’s only for some youngsters 16-18 so the crowd shouldn’t be to tough. Not sure when I’ll get another opportunity so I’m think go for it but I don’t wanna get nervous and train wreck. Or should I just wait a few months till I get better?

i made the mistake of getting in my own head about whether im good enough in april, i had a shot at a popular club in a side room for prydz, but i said no.

huge mistake. go for it. just make sure you have the right library for the venue. if theyre expecting house and you start playing black flag and the pixies you might be in hot water, at least with the owner/promoter. then again maybe not.

    fuck it.

Ill add: the best way to learn is to just do it live like Bill O’Reilly said. since my foolish mistake ive djed house parties where I live and it has helped a lot more than just doing in my room. your bedroom is a good place to get a mix together and learn which sounds/tracks work well with others, but that halfway goes out the window with a crowd in front of you.

as an ex semi pro gamer ill say that shit is running even if you kill the process. ill stand by the statement that any “work” pc should be used exclusively for that. this laptop i got, i specifically opted out of the 660M GTX they were offering at the time, even though the rep talked it down to like 80$ extra.

any gear for DJing should honestly be separate from any gaming rig you may play. bullshit like origin and steam will bog you down for days, plus your porn spyware.

i have a gaming PC and a laptop specific for music and DJing

my favorite transition is honestly intro outro. might be more complex than it sounds, but probably not.

i pretty much only spin trance, so keeping a constant flow to the set is a priority. ill find a 8 bar chunk like a minute or 2 into the next track, then use the mid and low EQs to slowly bleed them in, waiting for the downbeats ( i guess thats what theyre called ) with the woosh noises and shit to boost the next track in by like 10% while dropping 10% of the corresponding EQ, and perhaps dropping the upfade on the outgoing track by 1 dB.

its hard to explain without knowing the actual terminology, but thats my favorite way to mix. smooth as paula deen butter.

Load all 4 decks with random tracks, hit play then head over to the bar.

if i can try them on my ears ill probably buy those, however i have big head with giant ass will smith ears. the reason i liked the model of sennheisers i had was because the cans were giant ovals with cloth padding, fit my head/ears perfectly. hopefully an audio store or even best buy has these in stock, ill have to give them a look

that way the next time this bastard cat (who has been permabanned from my room) gets a hold of them ill just have to buy a new cord and not a whole new damned pair of headphones.

S4 has a lot of bells and whistles that i only sometimes wish i had. keep in mind its size vs the S2. the S2’s relative compactness is what steered me towards it and putting the extra green towards other stuff. of course the S4 was 950 back then…
