September 27, 2013 at 6:38 pm in reply to: How to recover from mistakes when performing live? #44725DJ DomicileParticipant
My go to for a bad mash up/mix is always having a sample of someone yelling “What the F was that?!” cued up. When I make horrible mix, I hit that then jump to the drop of a song. Seems to work well for me.
As for other mistakes, they are dealt with as they arise in whatever manner I think best. I’ve made some big mistakes before but just thought quickly how to recover and did so.
September 13, 2013 at 4:06 pm in reply to: DJ'ing at your own party – without physically DJ'ing #44149DJ DomicileParticipantMake playlists as suggested. I also like to make mini-mixes in these types of situations. 30-40min mixes that I pre-record at home. I have these as my go to’s if my equipment screws up/need a smoke break/want to enjoy a friends party for a bit without people touching my stuff. Not “ideal” as you can’t change the song selection on the fly but since I mix house/electro, it works for me.
DJ DomicileParticipantJust start playing around with it. It is not a user friendly program but massively powerful and once learned, can be customized to fit your work flow exactly (except for stacked wave forms). I used Traktor out of the gate and learned it by just using it and trying things. The Midi mapping can be very confusing (and there are some good tutorials online) but you can do sooo much with it. I have it set up so my entire screen is the mixer and then when I hit a button, the browser takes over the screen so I can do song selection. It’s like having two separate screens.
DJ DomicileParticipantI use cruise mode every so often. First, once you engage it DO NOT TOUCH THE FADERS. If you touch the faders, it will change the song. You can change the next song that will play by loading it into the non-playing deck if you want just don’t touch the fader. In the settings tab there is a setting to change when the new song will start/how long the fade in/out is. After you deselect cruise mode, the current song will continue to play at full fader volume even if the hardware fader is down.
Basically, if you use cruise mode, the main thing to understand is NEVER TOUCH THE FADERS when you have cruise mode on.
DJ DomicileParticipantI use dropbox as my backup. It’s $100 a year for a 100gigs but I have access to my entire collection anywhere there is internet and since I have my iTunes folder in my dropbox folder, it automatically syncs to the cloud so I don’t even have to manually do the back-up. It just does it.
August 12, 2013 at 1:11 pm in reply to: The Adaptive DJ,the future, past, present or not needed? #43104DJ DomicileParticipantI’ve turned down gigs when I was told that I’d have to use the house gear. While I can use a variety of different controllers or CDJ’s, they are not what I am comfortable with. I usually say to bar mangers/promoters, “You wouldn’t stop a band from bringing their own amps/guitars/pedals would you?”. A lot of people forget, especially these days with so many of us being Digital DJs, that our controllers/laptops are our instruments. They are tweaked and laid out specifically for each of us. Sure, most of us can adapt and use what’s provided but our sets will suffer and I care more about how I mix than just getting a gig.
August 6, 2013 at 7:01 pm in reply to: What are your Perks/Benefits/Spoils of being Dj or Djing #42932DJ DomicileParticipant1. Free Booze
2. Every girl at a house party will talk to me at some point
3. After partiesDJ DomicileParticipantI usually just throw on a remix of a popular song. It gets people on the floor but stays in my genre of music so when I mix out of it, it isn’t that jarring. Recently I’ve been using a Hypercrush remix of Goyte – Somebody I use to know or a remix of Psy – Gentleman but really, as long as people know it, it works (I’ve used Katy Perry, The Wanted, The Killers, U2, etc). It always works to bring people on the floor and then I keep the energy high for a few more songs and the floor stays packed.
DJ DomicileParticipantDepends. I do a few house parties a month and usually don’t charge a monetary fee IF a)someone picks me up b)they supply me with free beer (and they don’t care that by the end of the night I’m drunk) c)I can use their own sound system. If they won’t do all three of those things, then I will charge them but at a huge discount because it means more work/effort/money/not drinking etc on my part.
If it’s for a friends wedding, event, etc where they are making money or I have to be more “professional” then I do charge because it means I am there to work not to party.
April 8, 2013 at 1:48 pm in reply to: Please Help! Music quality on Traktor distorts into noise #38924DJ DomicileParticipantAs Gulli said, this is usually a problem with latency. If the Denon has it’s own, separate, software control interface, open that up and make sure everything is set how it should be and then make sure everything in Traktor is set correctly. If the problem doesn’t go away, check your cords but it really sounds like a software/driver/latency issue.
It might be annoying but uninstalling and reinstalling everything is also an option to consider.
