    Ah the first gig.
    You never forget it.

Through a family friend, I unexpectedly got called to dj for a wedding reception. There were to be 200+ people. I really wasn’t expecting the opportunity (I thought it would be like throwing myself to the wolves), but I didn’t want to pass it up. I didn’t have any equipment at the time, just virtualDJ and a pc.

It was a tricky situation because the dance floor was full of teenagers who were used to a college-type/club atmosphere, little kids who wanted Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, etc. , and older people who wanted more old-school, traditional tracks.

Was a bit nervous throughout the night, made a couple of mistakes. Tried to cater to all the different types of requests.

At the end of the night, everyone seemed to have had a good night, and I did a much better job than I thought I did. Got quite a few compliments.

Since then, I’ve only gotten better and more confident in my abilities. DJed at a bar, high school prom, etc.

Classics always work best. And when I say “classic”, I mean a song that’ll get a huge reaction even if you drop it 20 years from now.

    Ex. “In Da Club”
    “Billie Jean”
    “Mundian to Bach Ke”

Line dance songs also get everyone dancing too.

Yeah, definitely a great app, best one for DJing on a mobile platform for sure.
I have it for both iPhone / iPad, pretty crazy how you can just connect it to speakers via headphone jack and just start DJing.

Do you think DJs would be willing to adapt this though? Like DJing on 2 iPads instead of turn tables? I’m not sure I would…

To me, it’s the special relationship the DJ has with the dance floor. Feeding off the crowd’s energy and them feeding off your energy…it’s an amazing experience.

Music in general is gravitating toward EDM – incorporating elements of House, Electro, and Dubstep. The new Britney Spears album is a great example. Beyonce’s new song was produced by Diplo, and take Jason DeRulo’s song “Don’t Wanna Go Home” which samples a classic house track, “Show Me Love”

So yeah, definitely seems like that’s where we’re headed. I personally didn’t use to like Dubstep at all, but over the past few months, I’ve really gotten into it. I try to incorporate it into my mix throughout the night, and the reaction from the crowd is always great. It’s still niche, but will definitely pick up as more and more mainstream artists incorporate it in their music.

Favorite artists are Skrillex and Nero. Skrillex especially, he’s a true visionary.
