I was using sync in the beginning because I couldn’t beatmatch. Now I don’t like using it because the synced beatmatching isn’t tight enough in some cases (and I’m not gonna grid 4700 songs manually, that’s just not feasable…)

So for electronic mixing I go sync (there’s no point in beatmatching a fixed computer-generated rythm pattern anyway…it’s always gonna be 128.00 BPM), and for R&B, funk, disco, rock, I go manual beatmatching (primarily because the tempo is changing all the time).

Although I do love mashups and original ways of mixing, I must say I’ve seen to many DJ’s overdo the mash-up and other tricks… So you get to listen to 30 seconds of a song, and because the DJ is bored of hearing it, he switches or mashes up…

Makes me go “Hey ! I wasn’t finished enjoying that first song, I’m missing the bridge after the chorus !”

You just got to have taste, class, musical education, and character… and a sync button 🙂

I stay out of the red as much as I can, completely agree. Although I like the big sound peaks to be slightly in the red, just to make sure my sound has enough “texture” to it.

Django Reinhardt, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong, Sophie Milman, Kurt Elling, Gerschwin, Marcus Miller, Nat King Cole, Eddie costa, Eroll Garner, Michael Buble, Louis Prima are among my favorites.

Then there’s the lounge/jazz groups : dolls combers, Gotan project (which is tango, but hey they should be able to deal with it…), caravan palace.

    Hope it helps 😉

I wanted to take a break for the month of January. Listening to jazz, playing the guitar… But here I am, listening to bangers and preparing playlists in my head, and staring at my controller with desire… haha

So I’ve offered my local bar (like the one I’ve got all my friends in…) to DJ every Thursday, and they said yes.

So basically yeah it’s addictive 🙂

p.s.: I do advice taking a break to put things in perspective, helped me a lot reshaping my aspirations as a DJ. I’ve decided to play where I wanted to play rather than where I could eventually be needed…and understood that you can’t make artistic compromises for money…

been singing for 14 years and playing the guitar for 18 years.

It helps me a lot for recognizing good voices and melodies 🙂

Classics, classics, classics. Michael Jackson, Madonna, Abba, you name it. Single ladies by Beyonce etcaetera. don’t think dancefloor, think classic pop music everybody likes.

My first wedding was a catastrophy, I was playing the top 40 hits and at one point a guy comes to me and says : Do you have something we can dance to ? Rock, funk, disco, salsa… very danceable music.

I had a wedding where the husband was italian. I’ve played sicilian tarantellas, the dancefloor went nuts. Then I played some zouk caribbean music, then rock and roll. they don’t care about the “flow” of the mix, they want to be entertained and know the songs. They’re not there to discover new songs. Ask them what artists they like and build from there

And prepare a bit of lounge/jazz/blues music for when they’re eating.

When I work in the evening my wife would make me a nice meal, calm me down, tell me it’s gonna be ok and give me a big hug. When she comes to events she brings at least 5 to 10 friends with. And she gives me feedback on new songs I dig…

Oh yeah and she trusts me when I work, you know how we can get surrounded by girls as DJ’s, it takes a lot of love from them to cope with the girls being around us all night…. 🙂

my golden rule is : verse-chorus-verse-chorus minimum, and more if they’re really into it.

On an instrumental (electro, minimal) I’ll just wait for any bridge around the end of the song

The other day I was replacing a friend at a karaoke animation, thus it wasn’t my material. Just had a pc playing music and sending video to the beamer.

I wanted to prelisten a “happy birthday” song to see if it was the right one (it was the owner’s birthday)… so I just unplug the headphone connector to plug in my headphones, and at that moment realize that it was sending the music to the speakers…silence in the bar. Not to worry, just plug it back in. But the mediaplayer didn’t play anymore…

so I ran to my bag, took my smartphone, plugged it directly onto the mixer, and started a song. Then I had time to restart the mediaplayer on the computer…

There was maybe 30 seconds without music, felt like it was days…

Man I’m in Geneva Switzerland, and I’ve grown up to that song… a little overused, but it never misses to get the crowd crazy 🙂

I can’t wait for my new year’s gig in my local bar. I’m gonna try to be the guy with the two smartphones….

or maybe take my controller, just for some beatmatching… and throw a few effects… a few loops, just for the flow

I could even mix more than 2 songs at a time, and add a vocal loop !! and an echo and rev…

    oups…did it again…

    🙂

oh we have the same managers here, a lot of money and as few responsabilities as possible 🙂

You’re quite right to stay honest and do your job consciously, that’s always the best thing to do…

I once went to the bathroom only to come back and find a guy mixing on my tables, saying he’s a DJ and stuff. Man was I angry ! don’t…touch…my…stuff !!

He’s probably not gonna go very far in the showbiz given his attitude…. 🙂
