I’m rocking a ’10 Subaru WRX. I’ve been dreaming about getting a Subaru for as long as I can remember and last year I finally made it happen! Couldn’t be happier, especially when snow starts falling and the AWD comes alive.

Going to be starting my last year in actuarial science this September at University Laval in Quebec, then I’m headed off to a business school somewhere in the U.S. (I dunno which one yet) and going to get a master’s in finance or financial mathematics.

RedOne blatantly ripped off Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello in Judas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YDX3Mn5API)
Dr Luke ripped off Asphalt’s – Tonight for Daughtry’s song Feels like tonight, which was actually co-written with Max Martin.

There are literally dozens of these accusations concerning those three producers floating around, just google their name with plagiarism next to it and you’ll find tons. Some of them aren’t so credible, like when Dr. Luke ripped off a 1968 song for Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” (which he did and he eventually lost the lawsuit) but then again I think it’s more of a tribute than a ripoff when you use old riffs and melodies in newer songs.

The most blatant one for me though was Beyonce’s Run the world, which is simply Major Lazer’s (Afrojack + Diplo) Pon De Floor. They originally weren’t credited for the song because the producer had quite simply stolen it, but when word got out they decided to credit them as writers even if they didn’t even know Beyonce was using their track to make a new song.

There, I fixed it for you.

I mean no disrespect against you, but no matter how many hits these producers have made, they’ve stolen way too many from others to be given any respect. Look around, it shouldn’t be too hard to find some.

Don’t be afraid to inspire yourself with other people’s work. If you hear something you like, try it out yourself. Sampling is the foundation of house music, don’t be afraid to use it!

I’ve been producing on and off for a year. Haven’t gotten much yet, I’ve gotten good at laying down the basic ideas and melodies that pop in my head but I don’t have much spare time nowadays so I can’t really finish and master some tracks to show off, but the rough drafts I’ve had other DJs listen to have gotten me some excellent feedback, which keeps me going.

I’m working as an actuary right now and my life really revolves around that, but I’ll always be mixing and producing just for fun and if enough people like what I do then who knows? 😉

Guy seems to be the more elusive of the two since Thomas does most of the talking during interviews. I’ve seen one of his guest appearances at an Ed Banger event on YouTube, he definitely looks a bit older, but I’d still recognize him. Then again, I am an exception, as I have always been a pretty big fan of Daft Punk 😀

Yeah I’ve seen a couple videos of Bangalter, the one where he plays his remix of Signatunes at the Ed Banger party is amazing. What I was pointing out is that most of the people in that room probably had absolutely no idea that half of Daft Punk was playing for them at the moment, but people who know Deadmau5 have for the most part seen what he looks like without a mau5head.

I started off with an Omni Control and Traktor Pro, quickly switched to A&H Xone: DX and Itch. The waveforms and the simplicity of Itch is what I love the most about it, and it’s what I hated about Traktor.

There is a big difference between Deadmau5 and the members of Daft Punk. Deadmau5 has never tried hiding his true identity, he just uses the mouse heads to enhance his showmanship with lights and screens on them and wobbles it around.

Daft Punk have been great at hiding who they really are. Heck, they’ve even made a movie about their two robot counterparts, and I don’t think they’ve ever done an interview or a show without the masks on. I’m sure a ton of us here on DDJT wouldn’t even recognize the members of Daft Punk if we passed by them on the street.

I always discover new and exciting DJ/producers, but I think for me the most impressive and talented artist is by far Deadmau5.

His music is extremely original. I’ve only recently started listening to dubstep and what I like the most about the genre is that there seems to be no rules of what you can and can’t do. This is something that Deadmau5, with his techie background, has been able to break free of.

I also have a lot of respect for Eric Prydz. Everything he touches is pure gold. The sounds he uses in his tracks are all kind of similar, but every single riff/melody I hear from him is incredible.

Others I’m keeping a good eye on right now are Alesso, Tristan Garner, Skrillex and Feed Me.

I have a quite nice collection of headphones myself and plan on keeping it growing for a long time.

1. What headphones do you own?
– I own a pair of Sony MDR-7506, which I use mainly for producing on the go, although I don’t do much of that anymore. I just love having a pair of reference headphones which don’t have too much bass and the perfect amount of mids and highs to really appreciate some musical pieces. $130 USD

– I also own some Shure SE-110 that I bought like 3-4 years ago and they still work flawlessly. They’re a bit lacking in the bass department, but Shure’s noise isolation is absolutely incredible. When I have them in my ears and I snap my fingers next to them without any music playing, I can’t hear a thing. The newer models are the same price and have much better bass, so to anyone willing to plunk down $100 on a great pair of earphones, these are the ones I recommend. $120 USD for newer SE215 model

2. What headphones do you DJ with?
– The headphones I DJ with most of the time, at house parties, university parties or wherever the sound isn’t too deafening, is a trusty old pair of Sony MDR-V700 (the standard grey DJ headphones). These are the only headphones that I have a problem with: because the padding is kind of small, my ears tend to sit against the plastic speaker cover directly and after a while my ears get kinda sore. A lot of people have had complaints about them breaking at the joint where the earcup swivels, but I’ve had mine for a couple of years and still rocking hard with them. $150 USD

– This is where it gets weird. I’m still not 100% capable of DJing like this but working hard on it. My last pair of headphones are the Shure SE-535. I can’t stress how incredible these are. I use these in clubs and when there’s a lot more sound to protect my ears using the noise isolation technology and not have to crank up the volume to 11 on my headphones to try and mix in songs. I can keep volume low and still hear perfectly well. There are 3 drivers (speakers) in each of these bad boys: treble, mid and bass. The bass that comes out of this is deeper and much clearer than any other headphones I own.

The reason I say I’m not quite capable of DJing with these yet is that if you use the noise isolating foam, they’re a pain to get in and out of your ear constantly. You can use the other tips that they give you but I find that they’re not quite as good when it comes to shielding from outside noise. So you can’t really have one in one ear and monitor what’s going on with the other. You have to make sure whatever software/hardware you’re using is flexible enough on what you can monitor with your headphones. And make sure your pocket is deep enough. $500 USD

3. Could you reccomend me any headphones?
If you like the headphones you currently DJ with, I would choose to expand my headphones collection towards something else. If producing or mixing on the go is your thing, go with some reference headphones which don’t over-emphasize bass for DJ use. I can’t strongly recommend the MDR-7506 for the sole reason that I don’t know a lot about headphones in that department other than the fact that I love my 7506.

If you want some incredible all around headphones that you’re going to use to ride the bus, go running, mow the lawn or anything in between, I can’t stress how awesome Shure’s noise-isolating earphones are. Everyone I’ve recommended them to that ended up buying a pair has thanked me for pointing them in that direction. Don’t be afraid of their tiny size, the sound they put out is massive.

All the prices I have listed are directly from manufacturer’s websites and so you can get some of these for much cheaper on Amazon, eBay, etc.
