Dell Inspiron 15R. Update the BIOS, tweak settings for audio Performance: Flawless.

$700 in Feb, 2011. Might be less now.

Illinoize, you said “Happens sometimes, only when I’m selecting a different effect.” I’m no computer guru, but that sounds like your CPU is being taxed. Too much work for it to handle while you are using that particular user account.

What can you do? I would try eliminating needless processes and services in the Task Manager: Anti-Virus, Bluetooth, Updates, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, DVD-Burners, Roxio, iTunes Helper (only if you don’t use iTunes), etc… I turn everything I can off. I try not to turn off stuff that is necessary for windows, like services.exe. This is going to take some homework on your part.

    The bottom line is two-fold:

    1) You want your PC’s resources to be dedicated to only running the DJ software, as much as possible. You don’t want to be checking e-mail when you are at a gig.
    2) You want to optimize your PC’s settings so it is condusive to glitchless audio playback.

What does the second mean? It means adjusting your PC’s settings so that it is easy for the DJ software to reproduce the audio and changes to the audio being reproduced; i.e. pitch bends, pitch changes, effects, samples, GUI or skin changes.

I’m waiting for an article on Windows 7 Optimization for Audio. I remember there was an article here on digitaldjtips.com, “PC vs. MAC” I think, where this one commenter promised Phil he was going to post an optimization. I hope it’s still in the works. It would be really cool to see a Windows 7 Audio Optimization guide, specifically tailored to laptop DJ’ing.

I apologize for hijacking this thread 🙂

I’d say in about 5 ~ 6 years, LOL! He already is asking questions about samplers, sequencers, drum machines, unity gain, etc, etc…

That’s not Virtual DJ, bro. That’s your PC.

Bartboy, Styleflip kicks butt, dude. They made me a custom skin for my controller. I needed to associate all my controller’s functions to my DJ software as opposed to the trial software my controller came with. They do great work and get your product to you very quickly.

I started out in the world of digital DJ’ing two years ago with the Numark Total Control. It felt cheap and plasticky, but it showed me the ropes and helped me transition from CDJs to laptop based DJ’ing. The NTC has great functionality, ergonomics and build. It was the materials used that made it feel like a toy. I used it for about 6 months while I got my feet wet and got comfortable being a laptop DJ.

Second controller was a Hercules RMX. Great piece of kit! Worked flawlessly. Well built. Ergonomic. Full of functionality. I outgrew it, so I sold it, but I do miss it a little bit every now and then.

Third controller was a pair of Denon DN-SC2000s with an analog mixer. I really liked these and I still have ’em, but to many issues with the firmware. I didn’t appreciate Denon’s attitude with dealing with a known problem. I was able to finally devise a workaround to the many glitches. But, during one gig, I had them freeze up on me and that was all she wrote. I went online and bought my latest controller.

Newest and current controller is a Vestax TR-1. It was built specifically for Traktor. But for the exception of the FX buttons LEDs not lighting up, I have fully defined and mapped the TR-1 to use with Virtual DJ, my weapon of choice. The Vestax TR-1 is extremely flexible and is well suited for other softwares other than Traktor. It is phenomenal how well I got it to work with Virtual DJ.

I’m no controllerist by any means, and don’t remix anything to insane on the fly, so VDJ seemed like the logical choice for me. Traktor pro has a high learning curve in my opinion

Your assessment is the most honest I’ve read about Traktor. It is exactly how I feel about it, too.

I use Virtual DJ Pro 7, like you. I recently bought a Vestax TR-1. It came with Traktor LE. Traktor has cool effects, but you are right. It looks too difficult to pick up quickly. Also, the functionality is limited with LE and you really can’t get a taste of the whole thing the way it’s presented to you. NI is not doing a good job at trying to entice you to buy the full product.

I will purchase Traktor Pro soon. But only because I have a few DJ partners that use TP and TSP. Sometimes we do gigs together and I imagine it will be easier for us to work together if all of our softwares look the same. Plus it’s not a bad idea to be well rounded. Also, I’d hate to not use the discount to Traktor Pro that came with my Vestax TR-1.

I won’t ever leave Virtual DJ, because it does what it’s supposed to. Extreme GUI customization. Easy MIDI controller implementation. Easy Library access and organization (don’t need iTunes). Rock solid performance.
