DJimCParticipant
If you don’t mind changing the key on one of your songs a bit, just changing the key on the second song to Bm woud solve your problem perfectly. I normally don’t mind changing the key if it’s only 1 semitone up or down, but more than that will often degrade the quality of the song too much.
DJimCParticipantJust had a listen and really enjoyed the mix. Nice selection of typical DnB bangers 🙂
DJimCParticipantFinally had a chance to listen. Nice mix! The songs flow together quite well, which says something about your song selection and mixing technique. Keep it going like this and I can only expect more people will be enjoying your sounds.
DJimCParticipantI’m pretty sure the Vestax VCI-400 can do it if you have the latest firmware. Not sure if it’s got enough pre-amp for turntables, but if that’s necessary I suppose you can get those as well.
DJimCParticipantHonestly, I’m almost never using effects in my sets. If you can provide good music and mix it together in some non-disruptive fashion, you are definitely ready to play out.
DJimCParticipantThanks for listening and replying. Of course I can always find some small mistakes in my own mixes, but I’m glad these aren’t important or noticeable to a ‘normal’ listener.
I’m using a Vestax VCI 400 since a couple of months, but before then I was happily spinning with my Mixtrack Pro. For a mix like this I’m using only 2 decks anyway and no effects at all, so this could be achieved with almost every controller out there.
DJimCParticipantyour link isn’t working…
DJimCParticipantThis sounds really good. The harmonic mixing really makes all your mixes blend together a lot more. Great job on that front!
One thing I’d say you could improve is that some of the mixes become a bit crowded when you combine two build-ups to drop into the new song. Honestly, this is something I struggle with sometimes as well, but the trick is to remove some sounds from the old song by turning down the bass or even the high and mid and replace these with the new song. If it’s done right it can sound amazing, but if it becomes too crowded everyone is just waiting for it to end so they can enjoy the next song. Note that this only happened a couple of times during the mix, so it didn’t ruin it at all 🙂 (on example is the mix from Detonate into Hate the Game)
I really enjoy the tracks you choose. This whole mix actually reminds me of the kind of drum and bass that I like to play at the gigs I’ve got. I’m even pretty sure that I’ve made that exact transition you did between Digital World and Tonight a couple of times during a set.
Looking forward to hearing more mixes, your definitely improving very fast from the first mix you’ve posted here
DJimCParticipantI forgot to add this, but I also put my mixes on a filesharing site (in my case dnbshare.com) and put a downloadlink in the comments of my MixCloud mixes. I haven’t checked if there are any rules against this in the mixcloud policy, but I didn’t get any trouble from them yet.
DJimCParticipantI use mixcloud because I like the look and the fact that it forces you to post your tracklisting. However, I have not really been thinking about the amount of people I reach with it. My cloudcasts are only listened to by 20 to 30 people, but I haven’t been very active in promoting them either. Something I’d like to improve in 2013.
DJimCParticipantSounds like a really great first night. Already getting two more gigs out of your first gig ever is definitely a good sign.
Keeping track of which songs you’ve played can be difficult with CDs, but that will be less of a problem when you expand your collection. You’ll have plenty of bangers to choose from then.
DJimCParticipantOne very simple guide to harmonic mixing can be found here: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/05/beginner-1-2-3-of-mixing-in-key/
I use VirtualDJ and that takes care of key detection, but if you’re using traktor or serato I suppose a third-party application is needed. I’ve heard good things about mixed-in-key, but there are also free/open-source options like keyfinder: http://www.ibrahimshaath.co.uk/keyfinder/
Good luck with it and I’ll definitely listen to the results
DJimCParticipantI enjoyed that mix! Nice tune selection and overall good mixing.
One point for improvement would be key-matching. Some of your mixes were technically sound, but the keys of the songs really clashed and messed it up. I noticed this with the 2nd and 3rd tune and at some other points in the mix as well. Especially when trying for a long overlap between songs it’s important to keep an eye on your keys.
Definitely interested in the next mix, keep ’em coming!
DJimCParticipantThe cost varies for different controllers. It’s usually between $100 and $200 if you upgrade. I think you can try this out by starting the upgrade process on their website. It should show your upgrade price at some stage.

Not sure if Future Jungle and Rave Breaks will completely break through in 2013, it doesn’t seem to have the same clubbing appeal as DnB and Dubstep are having at the moment. I won’t dislike hearing some more of it though, so keep it coming 🙂
